Call of Duty: Warzone Player Creates ‘Gearless Joe’ to Combat Toxicity

Video games, and even specifically Call of Duty, have always been great at bringing players together for entertainment, laughs, and fun. Unfortunately, thanks to the anonymous nature of online gaming, a bit of toxicity can find itself into multiplayer action as well. One Call of Duty: Warzone player combated said toxicity recently with some hilarious gameplay, and a video to show it off.

The Call of Duty community has a reputation of being a little abrasive, to say the least. One of the biggest complaints of some members of the community is the idea of a player being a “try-hard.” Claiming that someone is a try-hard means that the person is using the best available guns in the game, playing to win, and taking the match seriously. There is also often a lacking of self-awareness with these claims, as the person who is upset with the “try-hard” is often using the same overpowered weapons (in say Call of Duty) and taking the match just as seriously.

Recently a Reddit user named u/KaptnKrunch09 decided they had enough of the name-calling and slurs based on every weapon choice, so instead, they went in fists-first. No guns. No gear. Just hands, something the player calls “Gearless Joe.” The player joined in a series of Plunder matches in Warzone and took down enemies only using their hands. And even though proper teamwork can be a key to victory in Warzone, the player even joined in without any backup whatsoever.

Many players jump into a match of Warzone using an overpowered MP5, powerful AR, or whatever the META (most effective tactic available) is in the moment. In the case of this player, they tossed out all of that strategy for a good ol’ fistfight, and based on the results of the video, it went quite well.

Of course, the community will still find something at fault. For example, one of the top comments in the Reddit post is someone mentioning that it is less than impressive because the fist kills were accomplished in Plunder (the game that allows for endless respawns), and not the battle royale mode in Warzone (which is also rumored to be headed to mobile).

There are some legitimate things to complain about in Warzone, like the hacker issue for example. But much of the time the whines of a player who just died in a game-mode where only one person/team can win is simply made out of frustration. For some, ignoring the toxicity is the best option. But for this Reddit user, the montage of beating down opponents in what would be perhaps the most embarrassing way possible is a fun way to strike back.

Call of Duty: Warzone is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
