Halo has had an incredibly long history, and still continues to be popular today. While many give credit to the games revolutionary mechanics and limit-pushing story, a lot of this success has to do with the Spartan concept.
Super human soldiers originally built for the Interplanetary War fought between humans, the Spartans would eventually be used in various conflicts against alien species, primarily the covenant. Throughout the HALO series players get the chance to play as two stand out Spartans, Master Chief and Noble 6, raising the question of who the better Spartan is?
10 Backgrounds
Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 is a Spartan series II soldier who served as one of the main figures in the war with the Covenant. Saving humanity more than once, he serves under the Navy Special Weapons Division and has in his lengthy service become one of the most decorated war-heroes in UNSC history.
Lieutenant SPARTAN-B312, or more simply, Noble 6, was a member of NOBLE team in the UNSC Army who served in the tragic Fall of Reach. Noble 6 is the only other Spartan besides Master Chief to have a “hyper-lethal” rating. While his actions are not as celebrated or well known, his role in keeping humanity alive, has been just as crucial as his counterpart’s.
9 Reputation (Master Chief)
Master Chief by far wins in the reputation category. So much so that Noble 6 does not even come close. The reality simply is that Master Chief has been able to serve decades and engage in a countless number of operations against threats to humanity, becoming one of the UNSC’s most decorated and well known heroes.
Master Chief is widely known throughout the UNSC as an icon of admiration and a role model, simply referred to as “Chief”. In addition to his in-game fame, Master Chief is one of the most recognizable video-game figures in history, with his quotes, actions, and exploits being well-known even outside the gaming community.
8 Rank (Noble 6)
While Master Chief does hold the highest enlisted rank, Noble 6 is an officer. As a Lieutenant Noble 6 outranks Master Chief, and could theoretically be placed as his commanding officer. Being an officer provides Noble 6 with more human resources at his fingertips and the ability to give direction and lead.
While Master Chief does posses the informal respect and reputation of UNSC soldiers, Noble 6 as an officer has an official capacity to lead and direct them.
7 Genetics (Master Chief)
Master Chief and Noble 6 come from different SPARTAN lines. Master Chief is a SPARTAN-II while Noble 6 comes from the III series. The principal difference in these two lines is design philosophy, while II’s were made to act as small, human tanks, Spartan-III’s were made to be cost effective and expendable.
This gives all SPARTAN-II’s a genetic and mechanical advantage. Master Chief as a II series has been enhanced to a higher genetic level, and had his bone and muscle structure changed to be physically larger, stronger, and faster. SPARTAN-III’s on the other hand have only been chemically modified and are not as enhanced as their predecessors, so Master Chief easily takes this one.
6 Persistence (Noble 6)
The Halo series has put it’s protagonists through some of the most difficult fights in video game history. As such, both Master Chief, and Noble 6 can be considered to be persistent. Noble 6, however, slightly edges out Master Chief regarding this one.
In the dying hours of Halo: Reach, Noble 6 fought back countless Elites while gravely injured, never giving up, even when defeat and death, were clearly and undeniably on the horizon.
5 Equipment (Master Chief)
In terms of weapons, both Master Chief and Noble 6 carried fleshed out and extremely effective arsenals. Master Chief does however get a chance to use more weapons then Noble 6, and has used virtually every lethal weapon available in the fight for humanity.
Finally what gives Master Chief a major advantage over Noble Six is that in later installments he is donning the MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor Mark VI. Noble Six only had the chance to wear Mark V. The Mark VI being a later model obviously provides the wearer with more mobility and defense, giving them a large advantage.
4 Abilities (Tie)
While Master Chief may be ahead genetically, all Spartans receive equally rigorous and detailed training on a wide range of combat areas. Each Spartan is a skilled sniper, close quarters combatant, explosives expert, and pilot.
Because of this equal training and preparation to defend humanity, Master Chief and Noble 6 are virtually identical in terms of abilities. This one is a tie.
3 Sacrifice (Noble 6)
Despite being well trained, well equipped, and created as a super soldier, none of this could save Noble 6 from his final moments. His death however tragic, was extremely heroic, and not in vain. Noble 6 died defending Cortana and Master Chief so they could in-turn save all of human life.
This sheer ability to sacrifice oneself, with a pure dedication to the mission and protecting life, is the true essence of what it means to be a Spartan super soldier.
2 Impact (Master Chief)
In terms of impact, Master Chief is the undisputed winner. His actions have not only saved, but shaped the Halo universe. The entire main stream series follows him and his actions, every pivotal point in the game, every major battle, every world changing event, Master chief is there playing a major role.
Outside of just the in-game universe Master Chief has become a symbol for the industry in general, and a mascot for the Xbox, as the face of one of it’s most successful game franchises of all time.
1 Verdict (Master Chief)
Beating the Chief is a tall order, one that Noble 6 simply could not fill out this time around. Master Chief, when considering his genetic modifications, better equipment, and most importantly, in-game and social impact, is the hands-down winner. However, coming in second place to one of gaming’s true legends is nothing to be ashamed of!
