Few card games have lingered in the gaming consciousness like Solitaire has, thanks to Microsoft’s version of Solitaire carrying many computer users through a boring day for decades. Now, indie studio Bithell Games has announced that it is shaking things up by using it as the basis for a new spy-themed game called The Solitaire Conspiracy.
Studio head Mike Bithell revealed this morning that this game will be the next entry in its “Bithell Games Shorts” collection, which consists of smaller, more experimental titles than the studio’s larger projects like Volume and John Wick Hex. While previous Shorts like Subsurface Circular and Quarantine Circular were surprise-launches, Bithell says that with things being what they are in 2020, it would be better to build up some interest for this one before it launches next month.
For a game described as a Short, The Solitaire Conspiracy sounds rather robust. Bithell pitches it as “Solitaire, but extra,” transforming the card game into a sci-fi thriller where players must rebuild their spy agency in the face of a global threat. In addition to a full-on story-driven campaign with FMV cutscenes, the game will also feature multiple modes, original character designs, and a soundtrack composed by Jon Everist (Battletech, Shadowrun: Dragonfall).
A few developers have tried their hand at creating video games around Solitaire throughout the years, but this looks like one of the more promising attempts. As for the launch, Bithell says he’ll have more to say about the game and the people making it over the next couple of weeks leading up to its debut, adding, “I’ll be doing so at the exact rate it takes to make ALL OF YOU WISHLIST IT.”
The Solitaire Conspiracy will launch on October 6 for PC via the Epic Games Store and Steam.
