August was definitely a huge month for gaming, with very few huge AAA releases hitting shelves but a number of smaller games growing incredibly popular in the eyes of gamers. Fall Guys obviously had a big debut, garnering worldwide acclaim and instantly transforming into one of the biggest battle royales in the world, while Madden became one of the more controversial entries in the annual series to date.
For those wondering which games made the biggest splashes online this month, some newly sourced stats from StreamElements show exactly which titles were the most popular on Twitch during August. The chart is organized by measuring how many hours viewers watched of August’s top games, with the results ranging into the millions.
While the “Just Chatting” category predictably took top place, League of Legends was the most-watched game on the service, jumping from its July total of 128 million hours to 135 million. That’s a roughly five percent increase over the month prior, which is undeniably impressive for a game that debuted back in 2009. Third place went to Fall Guys, with the brand new battle royale pulling in 106 million hours watched during the month. This is unbelievably impressive considering the indie title debuted during early August, with StreamElements revealing that it was the second-best streaming debut of 2020 behind Valorant, taking its silver medal from Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
The chart then sees Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Call of Duty: Modern Warefare take fourth, fifth, and sixth, while Valorant, Counter-Strike, and Dota 2 took seventh, eighth, and ninth. Minecraft slotted in tenth, before the surprising addition of Among Us, which finished the list off in eleventh with 30 million hours watched. Another fun tidbit from StreamElements reveals that Among Us bagged a leap of 650% over the months in 2020, showing that the game has well and truly skyrocketed over the year.
Considering what has managed to find intense popularity in September, it seems almost certain that Among Us will come much closer to the top of the list for this month, likely battling it out with Fall Guys near the top 5. The game has experienced a huge surge of players after finding a lot of success with major streamers and YouTubers, with PewDiePie, Markiplier, Pokimane, and more getting stuck into the hilarious online social deduction game. Fall Guys is obviously still doing great though, with season 2 on the way and its new Big Yeetus and Anti-Cheetus addition mixing up the gameplay significantly.
