Pokemon Sword and Shield fans are getting some exciting news, especially if they love action figure collectibles. Not only do Pokemon fans get to look forward to the upcoming Sword and Shield DLC expansion, The Crown Tundra, but the Gloria Figma is now getting a release date: June 2021 in Japan.
Pokemon has gotten some Figma figurines before, but this will be the first such item released for the popular Switch exclusives Sword and Shield. The figurine is of Gloria, the main female Pokemon trainer who fights across Galar as she competes in the gym challenge and then competed in a tournament of rivals before defeating the champion, Leon. The official art of Gloria has her in a gray sweater, short pink skirt and hiking boots.
The Figma figurine company is popular for creating highly-articulated action figures, usually from anime or video games. Some of the most popular figurines in its collection include the blue-haired Vocaloid Hatsune Miku and Goro Akechi from Persona 5. Figma is well-known for taking on well-loved characters and making them true to their original franchise, and the Gloria figurine certainly looks very much like the official art of her.
The Good Smile Company, which is a Japanese hobby product manufacturer, is revealing the figurine as including swappable faceplates and hands so that fans can pose Gloria and give her different expressions, as well as some extra accessories. Perhaps most excitingly, the figurine comes with three mini figures of the three Galar starter Pokemon, which gives the figurine owner the ability to pose Gloria in a variety of different scenes, or pick the starter to place next to her that they personally played the game with.
Figma are similar to Nendoroid figurines, another company known for creating figures from popular franchises. Each fan has their own favorite brand, and Nendoroids are generally seen as more collectible and more stereotypically “cute” given their big faces and eyes, while Figma are more articulated and give a person more options for posing and moving the figure around. It all depends on what people plan to use the figurines for, such as just showing them off on a bookshelf or using them to create photoshoots.
Since Figma has done figurines for other Pokemon trainers like Red and Selene in the past, it makes since that it would capitalize on Sword and Shield‘s success on the Switch. Maybe players who want to see Gloria’s male counterpart, Victor, will be rewarded with the chance to buy another figurine in the future.
