Persona 5 is & of the most stylish and entertaining games to ever come out on the PlayStation 4. Already one of the best RPGs in the genre, Persona 5 Royal somehow managed to improve upon a near-perfect formula and turn it into one of the greatest games ever released.
Mementos is one of the most interesting areas in Persona 5– a randomly-generated dungeon that people who’ve played through Persona 3 and 4 will be quite familiar with. Mementos plays a central role in the game’s story, especially near the end of the tale. 8 Mementos Houses One Of P5’s Hardest Enemies
The Reaper is one of the most infamous enemies in the Persona series, appearing ever since the third iteration and causing no end of grief for players who were unsuspectingly caught by this enemy and subsequently pummeled to kingdom come. This enemy makes an appearance in Persona 5 as well, and — just as one would expect — can be encountered in Mementos if players wait around for too long.

Persona 5 Royal makes everything bigger, better, and more fleshed out than it was in the original game. This can be seen in numerous instances across the re-release, including the fact that the background music in Mementos is significantly enhanced as well. One thing that keen artists would notice about Mementos’ design is the fact that it’s inspired by The Abyss of Hell painting from Sandro Botticelli. This is quite interesting, especially since Botticelli’s painting itself is based on the three Stages of Hell, as described by famed poet Dante Alighieri.
4 The Seven Deadly Sins Are Written In Latin By The Holy Grail’s Shrine
After figuring out the true mystery of Mementos, the Phantom Thieves decide to head down into the lowest Depths to discover the source behind the muddying of people’s cognitions.
This turns out to be a cognitive treasure known as the Holy Grail, which is housed in a shrine at the very depth of Mementos that has all the Seven Deadly Sins written on the floor in Latin.
3 Escalators Leading Downwards Signify Humanity’s Fall
All the stairs leading down the different Paths in Mementos serve as an allegory for humanity’s downfall with each and every heinous action that they do. There’s one sole exception to this, however, which has some pretty heavy connotations as well.

Maruki is a new character introduced in Persona 5 Royal, who is hired as the school’s counselor post the incident with Kamoshida. He decides to use the protagonist as a way to further his own research.
Later on, his experiments end up taking him down a rather dark path, forcing the Phantom Thieves to deal with his threat in Mementos. This new path inside of Mementos actually leads upward, which could signify the fact that Maruki saw his ambitions as a way for humanity to ascent, which is equal parts awesome and messed up.
1 Mementos’ Paths Are Named After The Qliphoth
Players who have in-depth knowledge on Jewish mysticism will have realized that the Paths of Mementos are named after the Qliphoth. It’s a nice little touch that shows that the people over at Atlus definitely did their research before developing the absolute masterpiece that is Persona 5.
