Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC Character ‘Leak’ Debunked

Since Super Smash Bros Ultimate launched with a massive cast of Nintendo and video game icons, many new characters have been added via DLC. Fans are always trying to guess who will be the next member to be added to the roster, and an apparent leak hinted that a much asked for fighter could be coming to the game. But upon further review, it looks like the “leak” was a fake.

A 4chan post recently claimed that the next member to be added to Smash Bros would be Geno, someone who has been hinted at in the past. But the poster added an Easter egg within their own submission, as the first letter of each sentence actually spell the word FAKE.

Not only did the fake leak mention that Geno was coming to Smash Bros. Ultimate, they also claimed that a new Kirby game was on the way, there will be a Kingdom Hearts port, and a new Hyrule Warriors based on Breath of the Wild was coming. Because the date is posted as way back in July, it looks at a glance that the leaks were all correct, with a Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was announced and Kirby Fighter 2 is indeed a thing. However, the “leaker” later admitted that the post was edited following the announcements of these games, and that’s why they were able to make it look like they were accurate with their post.

Readers originally saw that the July post had correctly predicted the new Hyrule Warriors and Kirby Fighter 2, the hope was that the Geno prediction was correct as well. But the poster admitted to altering the info and adding the word “F.A.K.E.,” saying “…Huh. Kind of surprised no one caught the joke.” So, unfortunately, Geno is not on the way to Smash Bros., or at least not based on this 4chan post.

Geno is a beloved character from Super Mario RPG on the Super Nintendo, but it still feels far fetched that he will be added to Super Smash Bros. at some point. The fact that his game came out over twenty years ago in 1996 doesn’t help his chances, although Sakurai (creator and director of Smash Bros) has said that Geno has been considered in the past.

At one point it seemed like a pipe-dream for Sonic, Snake, or Cloud to ever be added to the Nintendo fighting game, but those characters eventually and shockingly made their way to Smash Bros. So just like Terry and Banjo Kazooie have made their way to Ultimate, Geno could still be on the way.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available on Nintendo Switch.
