Ever since Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake was announced during September 10th’s Ubisoft Forward event, the publisher has alluded to the title releasing on Nintendo Switch multiple times. When the remake of the 2003 action-adventure platformer initially leaked earlier this year, the retailer listing the game as “Prince of Persia Remake” initially listed a Nintendo Switch version of the game alongside the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions. Now, once again, a retailer known as GamingReplay has listed a Nintendo Switch version of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, however this time it features some very convincing box art.
When Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake was first revealed a few weeks ago, the game was met with mixed reception by fans who were disappointed with the game’s underwhelming visual style, which some compared to a mobile game. Ubisoft has claimed that the game’s visual style is not a result of a reduced budget or development schedule. This, combined with the lack of any confirmed PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X releases, later lead fans to believe that the game’s visual style was being stripped back in order for it to release on Nintendo Switch.
What followed was the announcement from Ubisoft that the game would not be released on the handheld-console hybrid, followed by the publisher listing Nintendo Switch versions on both its website and French Twitter account, as well as multiple retailers. This once again lead fans to question if a Nintendo Switch version is being planned for later down the line. This would not be the first time a publisher has teased a Nintendo Switch version of a game intended to launch after its release on other consoles, as Activision did the same thing upon the announcement of Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which listed the Nintendo Switch version on its website the day it was announced, but launched almost a year after the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions.
This art accompanying GamingReplay’s listing of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake seems legitimate, as the art has been reformatted to fit the smaller dimensions of the Nintendo Switch box design, something many fan mock-ups are unable to do without the original art assets. While this listing mentions that the Nintendo Switch version will release alongside the other platform’s releases on January 21st, 2021, industry analyst Daniel Ahmad recently alluded to the fact that the Nintendo Switch version is planned to be released after the other ports.
Given the amount of leaks to stem from this alleged Nintendo Switch release of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, it seems the game’s release on the platform is inevitable, however it appears that the game will not release on Switch in January 2021.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on January 21st 2021.
