Earlier this month, Nintendo surprised fans with the reveal of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, set to be the Switch’s big holiday game for 2020. A prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will combine the hack-and-slash gameplay of the original Hyrule Warriors with a canon story. And now fans are getting an even closer look at the game thanks to a new trailer released by Nintendo during Tokyo Game Show.
The new Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Tokyo Game Show trailer focuses on the main playable characters that will be featured in the new game. This includes series mainstays like Link and Zelda, as well as Daruk of the Gorons, Mipha of the Zoras, Revali of the Ritos, and Urbosa of the Gerudos, the champions of Hyrule. Other characters are spotted in the trailer as well, like a miniature Guardian robot that tags along, and even a young Impa, who was an old woman during the events of Breath of the Wild.
The trailer gives fans a glimpse at the different champions’ special attacks, and how Breath of the Wild-specific abilities will be incorporated into the typical Hyrule Warriors gameplay formula. Overall, it looks as though the game should please both fans of Hyrule Warriors as well as those who want more of Breath of the Wild‘s story. Hopefully it will be enough to tide fans over until they get their hands on Breath of the Wild 2, as the wait for that game may still be quite a long one.
The new Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity trailer ended with a reminder about the game’s pre-order bonus, which is a Lucky Ladle currently exclusive to the digital version. However, it was also revealed that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will include a Training Sword weapon as well, available to anyone who links their Breath of the Wild save to the game. It’s possible there will be other bonuses for linking one’s Breath of the Wild save to Age of Calamity, but if so, they have yet to be revealed at this time.
More detailed information on Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity should be made in available in the coming weeks. The Tokyo Game Show presentation gave fans a better look at the playable characters and revealed some of the first gameplay, but there are still many unanswered questions. For example, it’s unclear exactly which game modes will be available in the new game come launch, and it’s also unknown if the game will feature any playable characters outside of the Breath of the Wild era. Fans will need to keep an eye out for more information.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity launches November 20, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
