Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Second Anniversary Should Honor Others

This is has got to be a very busy point in time for Nintendo, as it just so happens that a bunch of its games have anniversaries converging on one another right about now. It starts with Mario’s 35th anniversary, which is being celebrated with Super Mario 3D All-Stars. Still, there’s a lot more gaming birthdays ahead, so hopefully Nintendo has plans. For instance, although it’s not as momentous a number, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has its second anniversary this December. Odds are Nintendo will want to do something with that day.

However, it would be wise to take the positioning of that anniversary into consideration. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is about to celebrate just as all the other franchises are celebrating too. Smash has always been one of Nintendo’s most famous ways of bringing its mascots together, so maybe it can take advantage of that when the latest entry in the fighting game franchise turns two. With all these characters already tied into it, it’s just a matter of figuring out how to celebrate.

There’s a few ways that Nintendo could decide to celebrate all of its games at once through Smash. For instance, Nintendo has established a major fondness for Event Tourneys. Smash has its own online tourney mode where players can face off against up to 64 players, but every so often Nintendo releases an Event Tourney that limits character selection to a particular theme, like an all-Zelda affair or a special mechanic like giant fighters. With Pokemon, Zelda, and Super Mario all getting birthdays right around now, there could easily be a big event limiting players to fighters, stages, or items related to those games, as well as giving lucrative rewards themed on those games.

Another way that Nintendo could celebrate is with some kind of special limited-time Spirit Board. New Spirits with frequently been added to the game by means such as DLC fighters, so it wouldn’t be hard to imagine Nintendo making a particularly nostalgic Spirit Board for each of these anniversaries. These spirits could only be available for a limited time if Nintendo so chose, making it so that they become a nostalgic souvenir for players who participate in the celebration. It would be a good way to reiterate the importance of the Spirit mechanic too.

There’s one more really major but fairly unlikely way that Nintendo could decide to celebrate this convergence of anniversaries. Smash Ultimate is in its second wave of DLC fighters, but there’s been next to no information about the next fighter ever since Min Min came out last June. Maybe Nintendo is secretly plotting to release three fighters at once when Smash has its second birthday a few months from now. There would be an explosive fan reaction if a three-fighter anniversary DLC added a group consisting of something like a Generation 8 starter Pokemon, one of the four Champions from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the ever elusive Waluigi.

Naturally this is an extremely unlikely course of action. Even if Nintendo has been surprising players with things like Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity lately, it seems unlikely that it would use three precious DLC slots on this one celebration. Even so, there’s no way that Nintendo goes without acknowledging Smash Ultimate‘s birthday, and odds are it’s going to acknowledge some or all of these other birthdays in the process. Smash only exists because there’s so much love for these other games, after all. They’re all in it together, so they might as well celebrate together.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Switch.
