Black Ops Cold War May See the Return of Drop Shotting, With a Twist

One of the most exciting aspects of having a new Call of Duty game released annually is the myriad small ways that they’re each unique compared to the other Call of Duty sub-series.  The gameplay is just different enough that each game feels fresh. With the release of Black Ops Cold War, one of those unique gameplay mechanics is coming back after a hiatus. Once again, Call of Duty players will be able to drop shot.

Drop shotting, for those unfamiliar, is a mechanic that was likely never intended to be part of Call of Duty, but happened anyway. Basically, if a player aims down their sites and then goes prone, they’ll be able to keep firing with stable aim through the entire motion. It’s strong not only because of the brief aiming stability, but also because it moves the player’s hitbox in a surprising and difficult-to-track way.

Call of Duty players will likely recall that drop shotting was removed, or at least “fixed” to the point of uselessness, in Black Ops 4. As players shifted to prone, their weapon would switch to hipfire instead of continuously aiming down the sites. Modern Warfare brought drop shotting back, so players are understandably curious as to whether Treyarch kept the mechanic for Black Ops Cold War. The answer is yes, but not fully.

The recent Black Ops Cold War Alpha test revealed that drop-shotting does not work by default. However, a leak of weapon attachments from the alpha revealed what Treyarch is calling a Duster Handle. This  Duster Handle allowed players to “aim while going prone” while using the XM4 Rifle. In other words, with the Duster Handle attachment equipped players would be able to drop shot. The leak also implies that the Duster Handle will be available for many more weapons, possibly even for all weapons.

What Treyarch is doing should be immediately recognizable. In order to drop shot, players must use up their weapon’s accessory slot. Other accessories will offer similarly powerful boons so that Treyarch can ensure that there’s a balance of sorts.

It’s going to be interesting to see how many players choose to use the Duster Handle so that they can drop shot over other weapon accessories. If it was truly and overwhelmingly strong, Treyarch likely wouldn’t have included it in the game at all. All it takes is one high-level player to prove that it’s potentially broken, though. Call of Duty players will find out soon, as Black Ops Cold War‘s betas will be available in the next few weeks.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War releases November 13 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
