Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury is Getting His Own Marvel Disney+ Series

Marvel Studios is developing a Nick Fury series as part of its slate of television projects for Disney+. The series will see Samuel L. Jackson return as the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. in what would be the first regular television role of his career.

Samuel L. Jackson made his first appearance as Nick Fury in Marvel Studios’ Iron Man, the debut installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise. As the then-director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fury played a pivotal role in expanding the MCU by bringing together the heroes of each film series for The Avengers. Since then, Jackson’s Fury has played a supporting role in multiple MCU films and even made a guest appearance in two episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Jackson will now take the lead when he reprises his role for a Nick Fury series, though details on the Disney+ show’s plot, and more specifically where in the MCU timeline the show takes place, are currently mysterious. According to the outlet’s sources, Kyle Bradstreet is attached to write and executive produce the Marvel series, having previously served in the same role on USA’s Mr. Robot.

In total, Jackson has portrayed Nick Fury in eleven of Marvel Studios’ twenty-three features films. His most recent outing as Fury was in Spider-Man: Far From Home, though audiences later learned that the shapeshifting Skrull Talos had assumed the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director’s identity on his orders. A second post-credits scene revealed that the real Fury was actually on board a Skrull spaceship in an undisclosed location in space.

The Nick Fury series is just one of the many projects being developed for Disney+ as part of Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 plans. The line-up of shows was originally set to launch with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in August 2020, but production delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic required Disney to adjust its release schedule, resulting in WandaVision now being the first Marvel Studio series to debut on the streaming service.

As with the Nick Fury series, WandaVision, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, many of these Disney+ shows are initially focusing on supporting characters from the films. However, forthcoming series such as She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel will introduce new heroes to MCU before they appear in future films from Marvel Studios.

WandaVision is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Disney+ in December 2020.
