Studio Ghibli and its acclaimed director long moved past being just anime. Miyazaki’s films are beloved by a much wider audience because of an often whimsical and sometimes serious aesthetic paired with a collection of iconic characters that have a knack for being captivating. His work has also been a cultural touchstone internationally, earning recognition from the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles which featured  Miyazaki in its inaugural exhibit slated to open in 2021. The museum is run by the The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which picks the Academy Awards every year.

The normally reserved studio released the images while at the same time asking the public to respect Miyazaki’s work. The studio said in the blog post that these images were “free to use” but only “within the bounds of common sense.” Perhaps this was a plea to keep any memes involving their movies civil.

Choosing the best images among the batch release is a tough call, but looking at some of the award winners would be a good place to start. Spirited Away might be the most popular, earning an extra bit of acclaim after getting the Academy Award in 2001. Another place to look would be the oft underrated adaptation of Ursula K. LeGuin’s novel Tales from Earthsea. Also included are images from the last work directed by Miyazaki after his retirement, The Wind Rises.  There are countless other movies to choose from and it’s hard to make a bad choice.

While there are some notable movies missing, that might not be for long since the studio hinted at another batch release of images coming.
