The Outer Worlds: Murder on Eridanos DLC Needs One Thing That Peril on Gorgon Skipped Over

Earlier this month, Obsidian Entertainment released the first planned DLC pack, Peril on Gorgon, for its hit sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds. This 5-9 hour addition to the game allows players to solve the mystery of the Spacer’s Choice facility on Gorgon, the asteroid that gets added into the map once the DLC is downloaded.

The storytelling of the DLC is structured like a pulp noir film, filled with intrigue and mystery. Much like the stories found in the original The Outer Worlds, Peril on Gorgon takes a turn that’s classically characteristic of what fans have come to expect from Obsidian’s macabre plotlines and dark humor.

However, fans aren’t entirely pleased with the DLC. While it’s an interesting concept and it’s overall indicative of future DLC quality, it has a severe lack of new weaponry, leaving many fans unhappy and hoping the next DLC, Murder on Eridanos, picks up the slack.

Players with a penchant for using science weapons may be delighted to know that Peril on Gorgon adds three new science weapons with unique abilities. These weapons include the P.E.T. (Pest Extermination Tool) and a new specialized weapon that draws enemies to the player for easier close-range combat. So for those whose gameplay tailors to science and melee weapons, these new additions are sure to please.

Unfortunately, players who prefer playing with normal weapons have been massively let down by this DLC. The science weapon and Sprat Shack gameplay additions are unique and exciting, but no attention was given to adding new normal weaponry to the game. This lack of new guns and other types of non-science weapons has left fans hoping that the future Murder on Eridanos will make up for this oversight.

For all the fun gameplay that The Outer Worlds brings, its combat has been critiqued quite a few times by players for being too easy or not having enough variety in weaponry. While the upcoming DLC cannot fix all of these criticisms, it can add more weapons to cater to different gameplay styles and add more normal weapons instead of science-based ones.

Players are hoping to see more guns added to the game to add a new flare to combat that’s similar to Fallout: New Vegas. All new miniguns, sub-machine guns, and pump-action shotguns are high on many players’ weapon wish lists. It would be interesting if Murder on Eridanos added new explosives like plasma grenades to really pack a punch during combat as well, although that would seem unlikely (but not impossible.)

This isn’t to say that science weapons should be excluded entirely either, especially when they can be extremely useful and powerful during combat. However, as far as the upcoming DLC goes, science weapons should take a backseat so Obsidian can focus on creating new normal weapons not found in the Peril on Gorgon DLC

It’s also been critiqued that many enemies on Gorgon are re-skinned enemies found throughout the base game. Adding new, never-before-seen enemies would require more effort on behalf of the developer, but that kind of addition could go a long way. It would give players new enemies to defeat and a new design to marvel at, but could tie in well to the sequel, a theoretical and unannounced Outer Worlds 2.  Creating new enemies that are only found on the still-locked planets of Eridanos, Olympus, Hephaestus, and Typhon would be exciting and add a new layer of gameplay to The Outer Worlds. By introducing these enemies in the 2021 installment Murder on Eridanos, the full-blown sequel could focus on these newly-introduced enemies and stray away from the typical maruaders and some of the other monster types found on the original planets.

Hopefully, Obsidian takes these weapon critiques and requests to heart and players see new normal weapons in the next DLC Murder on Eridanos. Until its release, players can always do a new playthrough of The Outer Worlds or invest in Peril on Gorgon.

The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
