Nvidia Responds on RTX 3080 Crashing and Suspected Causes

Following reports that many of the gamers who managed to get their hands on a Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card have been experiencing regular crashing, rumors have circulated that cheaper capacitors in some partner cards may be the cause. Today Nvidia responded to the issue in a statement to a senior editor at PCWorld, stating that capacitor choice is “not necessarily indicative of quality.”

Nvidia added “…Our partners regularly customize their designs and we work closely with them in the process,” however several partner manufacturers have also released statements claiming that capacitor choice is indeed the cause of the crashing. EVGA claimed that using cheaper SP-CAP capacitors alone caused its cards to fail to “pass the real world applications testing,” and was the reason for delaying the launch of its EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 FTW3 series cards.

The problem is reportedly caused by interference when cards using solely cheaper capacitors push frequencies to the boost clock limits, and Nvidia has released a quick driver update to help mitigate the issue. However, it does so by lowering clock frequencies slightly, to reduce the chance of the card reaching the level that creates interference. Nvidia’s own RTX 3080 Founders Edition appears to be unaffected by the problem due to the inclusion of both cheaper and more expensive capacitors.

Gamers with cards that include a few of the more expensive MLCC capacitors have been reporting fewer crashes, while those with cards that feature a higher number of the MLCC capacitors have reportedly not been affected by the issue at all. Some sites have reported that hardware partners were still finalizing clock speeds even as the RTX 3080 was being announced by Nvidia, which may have resulted in insufficient time for testing the durability of the cards, particularly those which have been overclocked. A question remains whether some launch RTX 3090 cards may be affected by the same issues, although such a top end product would be more likely to use the more expensive MLCC capacitors.

While it does appear that cheaper capacitors are to blame, the quick and positive response of most hardware partners to affected gamers suggests that everyone has been caught off-guard by the issues. Cheaper components are always going to be part of how manufacturers reach lower price points, even for high end products such as the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090. While this typically impacts overclocking and cooling efficiency, no reputable manufacturer would deliberately include components that prevent a product from working at the advertised specifications.

After what was a hugely successful reveal, it’s a shame for gamers that the launch of the RTX 3080 has been plagued by problems. Perhaps a sign of Nvidia rushing to beat AMD’s RDNA 2 powered RX 6000 Series to market, or perhaps just bad luck that can come with cutting edge technology. Either way, gamers everywhere will be hoping that custom graphics card manufacturers are ready to fix the issues promptly in a way that doesn’t require underclocking.
