Pokemon Sword and Shield Adding Gigantamax Melmetal and Pokemon GO Connectivity

The Pokemon Company just released a lot of new information concerning Pokemon Sword and Shield. While most of it involves the Crown Tundra DLC, there was also an important announcement revolving around Pokemon GO that fans have waited to hear since Pokemon Home released some months back.

The news says that Pokemon GO will soon be able to connect to Pokemon Home, the cloud service that allows trainers to store and transfer the Pokemon they’ve caught from and to a variety of different Pokemon games. This means that trainers will be able to take the Pokemon they’ve acquired in Pokemon GO and transfer them to Pokemon Sword and Shield — and potentially any other future Pokemon games — through the Pokemon Home service.

To top all of this off, once the link between Pokemon GO and Pokemon Home goes live, The Pokemon Company will host a Pokemon GO and Pokemon Home event that will award trainers with a special kind of Mystery Gift. In Pokemon GO, the Mystery Gift will cause the Mythical Pokemon Meltan to appear on the opener’s map. In Pokemon Home, the gift will give trainers a unique version of Meltan, one with the ability to Gigantamax once it evolves into Melmetal. All trainers need to obtain each of these Mystery Boxes is transfer one Pokemon from Pokemon GO into Pokemon Home.

Precisely when the link will become active wasn’t touched on, but The Pokemon Company did state it wanted to have it available by the end of the year. With that in mind, it’s probably safe to say that trainers shouldn’t expect the link anytime before October 22, the Crown Tundra’s release date. Early December seems like a reasonable window.

There are also a few disclaimers that fans should know about concerning Pokemon GO and Pokemon Home’s upcoming connection. Like the GBA Pokemon games, once a trainer transfers a Pokemon from Pokemon GO into Pokemon Home, they can’t move it back. Also, not every Pokemon available in Pokemon GO can make their way into Pokemon Home. These Pokemon would be any Pokemon released explicitly for Pokemon GO, like the special Pikachu that wears a Christmas hat.

Overall, the end of 2020 is looking good for Pokemon. Pokemon Sword and Shield will receive their final DLC in late October. Then trainers will be able to look forward to the link between Pokemon GO and Pokemon Home, which will hopefully arrive before 2020 ends.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are on Nintendo Switch.
