Genshin Impact has hit the ground running, and it seems as though gamers are loving this what it has to offer so far. Although Genshin Impact can be completed solo or in co-op, the game is much more fun with friends, which leads many to the same question about the game’s cross platform capabilities.
Genshin Impact is currently available for mobile, PC, and PS4, and will be getting a Switch port at a later date, but fans want to know what kind of cross platform options it has to offer. In today’s gaming world, cross-play and even cross progression are becoming increasingly common, and gamers are beginning to expect this amenity.
In short, Genshin Impact allows cross-play between all currently supported systems, meaning even mobile users can hop on and play with players on PS4 or PC. Cross progression is a bit of a different story, and even the cross-play mechanics have a few restrictions that players should know before playing Genshin Impact.
For cross platform play, the only notable restriction is that all players must be on the same server. This is very important for those planning on playing Genshin Impact with friends on other platforms, as it is vital that everyone picks the same server at the start of the game. Other than this, players on any platform are able to play with each other so long as the host allows it. Each individual can change their settings to turn cross-play off if they’d like, though there doesn’t seem to be a need for this setting just yet.
In terms of cross progression, players on mobile and PC are able to transfer character data and progression from one platform to the other, but PS4 players cannot. This limitation on PS4 is unfortunate, but it is understandable nonetheless. It has not yet been confirmed, but more likely than not the Switch version of the game coming out later will also not allow cross progression, meaning players using these consoles will have to make new Genshin Impact accounts on PC or mobile if they want to play on those devices. It’s theoretically possible that this could change in the future, though the developers haven’t made any statements indicating that it’s a priority.
These are all the ways the game supports cross platform play, and all things considered it’s pretty impressive given that Genshin Impact is free to play. There are some minor drawbacks to allowing cross-play, for example PS4 players are reporting slower load times and some mobile players are experiencing crashes due to overheating, but it’s still great to have that option to play with friends regardless of platform.
Genshin Impact is available now on Mobile, PC, and PS4, and later on Switch.
