Demon’s Souls Deluxe Edition Criticized as ‘Pay to Win’ By Purists

The widely anticipated release of the Demon’s Souls remake is just a little over a month away, and fans of the game could not be more excited. When the game initially released on the PS3 back in 2009, Demon’s Souls slowly but surely achieved cult classic status among many in the gaming community. Though, many hardcore fans of the series have begun to criticize the game as a result of its pre-order bonuses.

As the name implies, Demon’s Souls is the first unofficial entry in the Dark Souls series and became the pre-cursor game for the genre as a whole. As many in the gaming community know, Dark Souls style games are known for their high level of difficulty and limited checkpoints. For numerous fans of the series, the fewer advantages the player is given, the more pure and diegetic the experience ultimately is, which is why many fans are not happy with the bonuses included with pre-ordered copies.

The Demon’s Souls pre-order bonuses for the digital deluxe edition were shown off today, and as most people would expect, the bonuses are the typical standard inclusions. Weapons, items, armor sets, a shield, additional souls, and the official soundtrack all come included when fans pre-order the game. Though, this led to an outcry from many Demon’s Souls purists.

Some fans felt that the inclusion of pre-order bonuses gave the player too many advantages right from the start, making the earlier parts of the game easier as a result. For longtime fans of the game, and the franchise as a whole, these types of changes to the original Demon’s Souls aren’t what the game needs.

In all honesty, the pre-order bonuses should not affect the experience as negatively as some fans believe they will. There is always the option to not utilize the bonuses or to just not install them. Additionally, fans can just buy a standard copy of the game without any of the added bonuses. Also, what if someone has never played a Souls game before and isn’t used the high level of difficulty, these bonuses can greatly help out Dark Souls beginners.

In any case, these bonuses are again, just standard bonuses expected of just about any kind of pre-order or digital deluxe versions of any game. The developers aren’t forcing players to buy the Demon’s Souls digital deluxe edition or pre-order the game just to receive the bonuses. Either way, it won’t be long until the game is officially released and users can play the game however they want.

Demon’s Souls is set to launch on November 12th, 2020, exclusively for PS5.
