The Switch‘s library has become quite robust and diverse since the console’s release in March 2017. Part of this is thanks to the pool of memorable IPs from Nintendo and second party partners, many of which have seen remasters or sequels on the console.
And with SNES games popping up on Switch’s online service, along with revamps like Trials of Mana reminding us of the golden age of 16 bits, one can’t help but yearn for some other SNES classics to hit the Switch in one form or another. With that said, let’s explore 10 SNES-based franchises that could do for remakes or sequels on Nintendo’s latest console.
10 Kirby’s Dream Course
While there’s been no shortage of games featuring this amorphous pink puffball, this underrated spinoff has remained in obscurity for decades now. And given its reappearance on the Switch’s online service, now would seem like a great time to revive this charming mini-golf romp with a new entry on Switch.
The object of Kirby’s Dream Course is to shoot Kirby around an isometric course, working with power, spin, and angles to wallop baddies and guide him into a hole. Between its fun competitive multiplayer and intuitive, pick-up-and-play nature, this one-off Kirby game would fit like a glove on the Switch library.
9 Final Fight
Given the recent renaissance of other classic brawlers like Battletoads and Streets of Rage, it’d seem like a no-brainer to resuscitate this knockout from Capcom.
While Final Fight has seen a few obscure sequels in the last couple of decades – to mixed reception – this addictive beat ’em up hasn’t really been in prime form since the ’90s. It’d be great to see a new rendition that blends modern aesthetics – or perhaps stylized graphics a la Streets of Rage – with the tight mechanics and fun co-op of the original games.
8 Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Speaking of entertaining co-op titles, Zombies Ate My Neighbors stands as one of the more overlooked romps on SNES, particularly when it comes to the exciting multiplayer. One can only imagine the potential of a sequel on Switch, which could allow players to blast, squirt, and zap zombies simultaneously online.
Perhaps there could even be rotating challenges and a survival mode laced with online leaderboards to show off to friends. This is truly a run-and-gun romp that’s begging to be brought back from the dead.
7 Yoshi’s Island
Of course, there have been various 2D platformers featuring Mario’s egg-loving dino companion since this charming game hit the SNES. Still, one can’t help but wonder what a true return to the style of Yoshi’s Island might be like on Switch, complete with its coloring book visuals and epic boss fights.
Fans of this Mario spinoff did get a taste of this with Artoon’s Yoshi’s Island 2 on DS, and Arzest’s Yoshi’s New Island on 3DS. Still, it’d be nice to see Nintendo take the reigns once again at a full-fledged sequel that truly takes the series back to its roots. The game could adhere to the core mechanics and concepts of the original while expanding on certain areas like that appealing multiplayer mode.
6 E.V.O.: Search For Eden
Taking its place as the most unorthodox choice on this list is Square’s E.V.O., a unique action RPG from 1992. The game takes its narrative to a new level in terms of scope and grandiosity – following the story of human life itself.
In some ways, E.V.O. feels more like an evolution simulator than an RPG, as players will literally fight their way up the food chain from basic sea creature to caveman warrior. The game utilizes fighting mechanics that are simple, yet satisfying. It cleverly implements stat-boosts and augmentations which can be affixed to one’s constantly-evolving fighter. E.V.O.‘s emphasis on quick action and sidescrolling gameplay grants an experience that’s both epic and accessible; one that would make a great fit for Switch.
5 Star Fox
It’s true that this classic space-shooter left a bad taste in the mouths of many with the tepid, somewhat convoluted Star Fox Zero on Wii U. Regardless, you’d be hard-pressed to find a Star Fox fan who wouldn’t want to see an honest-to-God successor for Switch.
A Switch sequel can offer gorgeous visuals that fit with the epic sensibilities of this galactic journey, leaving the polygonal roughness of ’90s Star Fox in the dust. Additions like online challenges and co-op can be added for the sake of longevity. At the same time, the game can ditch the gimmicks of recent entries and get back to basics with thrilling space-shooting action.
4 Chrono Trigger
As it happens, one of the last RPG releases for Super Nintendo ended up being one of the most memorable. This sci-fi fantasy epic adheres to the typical appealing gameplay and depth Square was and is known for. At the same time, the game reaches another level with its vibrant visuals, imaginative story, and a slew of majestic environments.
Some likable characters, enjoyable combat, and a gripping time-traveling premise keep players enticed throughout this 25-hour adventure. Given that only a few games comprise this series, a full-on remake or sequel for Switch would be the stuff of legend.
3 F-Zero
This renowned futuristic racer had the misfortune of being overshadowed by the likes of Mario Kart, which tended to have a more mass-market appeal. Still, the underrated F-Zero GX on GameCube should be an indicator as to the potential for this long-dormant franchise starring Captain Falcon.
And really, if there’s a Switch sequel that can really flourish from Nintendo’s online service, this is it. One can only imagine the potential of facing off against 20-30 other players online, zipping across a dazzling Mute City and beyond at a smooth 60 frames per second.
2 Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars
Sure, one can argue the merits of the similar Paper Mario series, which is stronger than ever thanks to the charming Origami King, which is partly a return to the series’ roots. But with that said, there’s a certain appeal to this Square-Nintendo collab from ’96 that Paper Mario can’t quite match. And now that the RPG juggernauts are seemingly on good terms with the Big N again, now would be as good a time as any for a sequel.
One’s imagination truly runs wild with the prospect of an even more epic follow-up to Super Mario RPG. Not only is there the Switch’s leap in horsepower, which can produce rich, captivating environments, but you’ve also got the online capabilities, motion control, and touchscreen – all of which can benefit such an effort.
1 Earthbound
When it comes to Nintendo IPs, the delightfully charming and weird Earthbound has been consistently the most desired for decades now – basically reaching meme-status. Fans have all-but begged for a new entry in this majestic series, also known as Mother; or at least a Westernized version of Mother 3.
A follow-up for Switch would likely be one of the most anticipated, monumentally-hyped titles of the decade. One can’t help but wonder just what sort of ethereal adventures would be in store for Ness and company on the Big N’s latest console. But for now, fans can only dream of what could be…
