PS5 and PS4 May Support Cross-Gen Chat | Game Rant

With the launch of the PlayStation 5 a little over a month away, almost all of the relevant information consumers need to know about the console is readily available. With a confirmed release date and price listings on all PS5 related hardware and peripherals, all that’s left now is for the console to release in November. Though, the upcoming console has a slew of additional features that some consumers may not yet be aware of.

The PS5 had been in development for a number of years, with solid information releases regarding the console being very few and far between. It wasn’t until 2020 that news regarding the newest PlayStation installment started to circulate, such as the PS5 console design, the technical specifications, the price and release date of the console, along with many other details. However, source code found on the PlayStation website reportedly shows a number of unannounced PS5 features.

One of the biggest and most curious features being the ability to “message and voice chat with friends across PS4, PS5, and PlayStation App.” Now, cross generational voice chat is not exactly a common occurrence in the gaming industry, nor cross platform voice chat. For games like Fortnite, that have users playing all across various platforms, it is almost a necessity, but typically isn’t a feature exclusive on consoles, due to how situational it is for certain games.  If this does turn out to be a feature on the PS5, it would be incredibly useful to all of its users, not just those on the PS5.

In addition to cross generational voice and message chat, the PS5 will supposedly also feature the ability to set an image and name for any group chat, making chat organization easier. In addition, users will also have a wishlist page on the PS5 itself, a feature that wasn’t included on the PS4. Players will also be able to share voice clips, music artists, albums, playlists, and music tracks on the console, presumably through apps like Spotify.

It is, however, important to note that as of right now, none of this information is confirmed by Sony. Until it is, all of this information should be taken with a grain of salt. Although, if any of this information does turn out to be true, then this means the console will include quite a number of quality of life features that were not included on the PS4.

With the launch of the PS5 a little over a month away, it’s surprising how much information Sony has yet to divulge about the console. If these presumed features are any indication of the future, then the PS5 should turn out to be quite an incredible piece of hardware. With a plethora of impressive PS5 launch titles to choose from, fans have a lot to look forward to.

The PlayStation 5 is set to launch on November 12th, 2020.
