Netflix Knows Who It Wants to Play Dream in The Sandman

Neil Gaiman, creator of critically acclaimed comic book The Sandman recently announced that Netflix’s adaptation of the story would officially begin shooting very soon. As with any adaptation of a classic story, speculation continues to fly around about who should play which character, and who might be in talks to star. As reported exclusively by Collider, the starring role of Netflix’s adaptation is currently being offered to Tom Sturridge.

The original 75-issue comic starred Dream, also called Morpheus and Sandman. Dream is the Lord of Dreams, and part of The Endless, a group of mysterious immortal beings that represent concepts like death, delirium, and destruction. Things pick up with Dream having been captured by an occult ritual and imprisoned for 70 years, before breaking free into the modern world. As Dream explores the new world and rebuilds his kingdom, he explores how things have changed since his imprisonment, and learns to change himself.

As for the adaptation, sources indicate that Sturridge was tested for the role earlier in the year along with Tom York and Colin Morgan. Sturridge has been in a few projects recently, including the Starz series Sweetbitter and the Netflix film Velvet Buzzsaw. Of course, no official announcement has been made, and Collider reports that things have yet to be set in stone. At the time of writing, Sturridge’s representatives have declined to comment on the reports; Netflix has also not responded.

This isn’t the first time Vertigo Comics has attempted to adapt The Sandman into live action. Famously, the company once asked Joseph Gordon-Levitt to direct and star in a feature adaptation which he worked on for three years before leaving over creative differences. That project ended in 2016 as far as the public is aware, and things have changed in the media landscape quite a bit since it began. Perhaps Netflix can offer the IP a format that better suits its world and story. Fans of Gaiman’s work and The Sandman will have to wait and see when the company finally releases some more official materials as the show begins production.

The Sandman will release on Netflix in 2021.
