More and more TV shows have spun back into production, hoping to prep new seasons as soon as possible despite the current pandemic rules. While some have had success, others continue to hit roadblocks related to testing, social distancing, and positive cases. The latest productions to be put on hold are both due to testing delays in British Columbia. Both Batwoman and Riverdale production have been put on hold as a result.
Of course, they’re not the only shows that have been facing delays. Legends of Tomorrow, produced by Warner Bros. Television is also being halted, as well as Supergirl. Netflix has shut down one of its local projects as well. Sony has yet to comment on the status of The Good Doctor and Disney is similarly mum on the status of shows like The Mighty Ducks and A Million Little Things.
On the bright side, everyone seems to believe these stoppages will only be temporary until things get sorted out with testing. The slowdown seems to be due to the fact that British Columbia only has one lab company that is officially approved to oversee the testing, and it is currently prioritizing schools and and local businesses that have begun to reopen. It would seem that until the high priority locations have been thoroughly tested and processed, non-essential businesses and industries will have to wait in order to crank back in full swing, and that includes quite a few TV crews.
It’s likely for the best that filming slows down while testing is in such high demand. While some shows have been able to continue production, there have been pretty strict safety rules in place, and one of the best rules has been constant testing. When Supernatural started filming again, for example, co-showrunner Robert Singer admitted that production required testing every single one of the 360 crew members 3 times a week. While that may be workable in certain circumstances, it’s going to be a difficult ask for any location that is also trying to test a glut of schools and businesses at the same time. For now it seems crews will just have to wait until more essential services get their testing handled and over with.
