A Chinese cosplayer has leveled accusations at Netflix, accusing the streaming platform of borrowing her likeness for the character model of Claire Redfield in its marketing materials for the recently announced Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness.
The cosplayer, Rissoft, argued that Netflix had taken influence from her face and pose for Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, highlighting a previous image of her cosplaying as the popular character as evidence to her claim. Her initial tweets accusing the company have since been deleted after Resident Evil fans caught wind of her accusations, with some seeing the similarities and providing their support, whereas others argued otherwise.
In another tweet, the cosplayer overlayed the two images, creating a Redfield composite of Netflix’s marketing image and her cosplay. Rissoft pointed out to her fans how the “features are in The same position” and stressed that the character model appeared to have the same eyes, eyebrows, lips, expression, and even the same folds in her clothes. She then joked how it could just be a coincidence, suggesting it would be a “Miracle” if it were.
The Resident Evil character debuted in the popular survival horror series back in 1998’s Resident Evil 2 on the PlayStation. She has since appeared heavily across the entire franchise, including its forays into movies and CGI features, including Resident Evil Degeneration.
Netflix announced the new CGI series Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness during a recent panel at Tokyo Game Show 2020. The new series will be produced and supervised by Capcom’s Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who has been responsible for several Resident Evil titles. Given its recent announcement, story details are still shrouded in mystery at the time of writing. The series intends to lean into its horror roots and will seemingly be focused on Resident Evil 2 protagonists Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Netflix promises that by adding suspense into dramatic scenes, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness will “reveal a Resident Evil world unlike anything seen before.” It is not known at this time if other franchise favorites like Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine will be making an appearance.
Although Redfield has appeared in previous CGI Resident Evil movies, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness has harnessed graphical and technological updates to create what Netflix calls “unprecedented full 3DCG animation,” leading to a new, yet recognizable, look to both characters.
Since the first game released in 1996, changing and evolving the survival horror genre in the process, the Resident Evil franchise has grown to encompass over 140 different titles across video game consoles, phone apps, movies, and more, leading it to become one of Capcom’s most popular and lucrative brands with over 100 million total copies of the game series having shipped worldwide.
Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness is set to debut on Netflix in 2021.
