It is well known that both Call of Duty: Warzone and Modern Warfare have a severe hacker problem. While Activision and Infinity Ward work hard to stop cheating players, members of the Call of Duty community continue to report problems. With Warzone having millions of players registered, Infinity Ward and Activision have an uphill battle to contend with.
Hacking continues to be a problem, but recent Infinity Ward and Activision report that anti-cheat endeavors have proven effective. Thousands of accounts have been punished for cheating with a zero-tolerance policy restricting account retrieval. While there is still a problem, fans at least have confirmation that the developers are doing something about it.
A tweet from Infinity Ward reports that to date their team has successfully banned 200,000 accounts for cheating since the game’s launch. While the community may not see the direct impact of their efforts, most fans are aware of the most recent ban wave numbering in 20,000 banned players. The tweet goes on to explain that the developers are deploying additional security updates along with new backend enforcement tools to help maintain their zero-tolerance policy on cheaters. While this is a step in the right direction, many fans in the comments remain unimpressed with the low number of bans.
One fan breaks down the numbers pointing out that in the first month of Warzone, Activision banned 70,000 cheaters. This is after the developers announced that they had surpassed 50 million unique players, but keep in mind that as of August 4th, that number has increased past 75 million unique accounts. Still, six months later, the developers only banned an additional 130,000 accounts. That is only around 22,000 accounts per month against a population of 75 million players.
Other fans argue that at least some progress is being made. Although the number may seem small, it is still a large step in the right direction for securing Warzone and Modern Warfare, making them cheater free. More reports are being addressed, and many fans are sharing the Activision response banner that appears after their report resulted in a ban. Cheating is a complicated issue, and the developers need to make sure it accuses as few honest players of cheating as possible in its massive ban waves.
There is no easy answer to the hacker problem in Warzone or Modern Warfare. All fans can do is hope that the speed of bans increase, and that a dent in the cheater population will become more apparent.
