On Thursday, Masahiro Sakurai set the internet ablaze once again by announcing Steve, Minecraft’s blocky, bearded avatar, would be coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Each of the game’s DLC Challenger Pack’s include musical tracks alongside fresh fighters, and in today’s livestream, Sakurai detailed which tunes would be coming to the cross-over brawler.
Steve (as well as alternate skins including Alex, Enderman, and Zombie) brings the total Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster to a staggering 84 fighters. Even though the announcement came as a shocker to Smash Bros. fans, an ex-Mojang employee revealed that Nintendo’s Minecraft crossover deal has been in the works for a very long time. And on today’s stream, Sakurai revealed that finding music for the Challenger Pack presented an interesting challenge.
While the music in Minecraft is enchanting, most of the tracks in the procedural sandbox game are decidedly sedate. Those soothing, soft-spoken melodies would be at odds with the frenetic fights that define the Super Smash Bros. franchise, which forced Nintendo to look elsewhere to find suitable tunes. In the end, they settled on fresh arrangements of music from Minecraft mini-games and spinoff titles, including Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Earth.
The song list for Challenger Pack 7 is as-follows:

Challenger Pack 7 may be the most labor-intensive addition to the game yet, as the developers had to rework every stage in SSBU to accommodate Minecraft’s DLC. That effort is also reflected in the DLC’s music, as six out of seven tracks are new, up-tempo arrangements of music that was drawn from three games rather than only one.
The new DLC’s announcement is timely, as Mojang announced a new expansion is coming to Minecraft in today’s Minecraft Live 2020 stream. Regrettably, the game’s Caves and Cliffs expansion is still a long ways away, especially compared to Challenger Pack 7’s fast-approaching October 13th arrival date for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. But revealing Steve’s arrival in video games’ most famous cross-over title is a smart way to keep Minecraft at the forefront of social media during Mojang’s own expansion announcement.
Minecraft isn’t the only game getting recognition in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate this October. Nintendo also announced that Mii Fighter DLC costumes featuring Bomberman and Travis Touchdown of the No More Heroes franchise would also be joining the fray. And Sakurai is far from finished. Four more fighters have yet to be revealed, and fans are lobbying hard on social media for their favorites to make the cut.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for the Nintendo Switch. Challenger Pack 7 will arrive on October 13th.
