While not a platform commonly associated with gaming, Macs still have a selection of titles that will work with them, and it appears a major new one will be on the way soon, as Larian Studios has announced that Baldur’s Gate 3 will launch in early access on Mac tomorrow, alongside the PC and Stadia versions of the Dungeons and Dragons game.
One thing to keep in mind is the Baldur’s Gate 3 list of system requirements, especially considering that this is an early access launch. Baldur’s Gate 3 takes up 150 GB of space, so users planning to play on entry-level MacBooks may be out of luck, as many start at a paltry 128 GB of storage space, not including the OS. Even users with a 256 GB model may want to keep that in mind, as it almost turns the Mac into a dedicated Baldur’s Gate device.
Those with larger iMac computers don’t have to worry as much though, as there’s a wider variety of hardware that should make for a relatively smooth experience, depending on the player’s specification. Ultimately, this is a good thing simply because it opens the game up to a wider audience, though it will be interesting to see how many Mac users end up purchasing the game for the platform.
Support for video games on Mac isn’t all too common anymore, for a variety of reasons. Seeing support from a triple-a game like Baldur’s Gate 3 – especially in early access – is an interesting shirking of an industry trend. World of Warcraft has featured Mac support for some time, but the selection of titles is relatively thin, at least compared to the number of games that release for competing platforms.
With the game launching tomorrow, fans have a lot to look forward to. Of course, as the game is an early access release, players will only have access to Baldur’s Gate 3’s first act, though that still means about 25 hours of content. That’s comparable to some full release games, so it should keep players entertained for quite some time, especially those opting for multiple playthroughs.
Those on the fence about whether or not to pick the game up on day one should keep in mind that there are bound to be some kinks upon launch. Early access has become a more common practice, though, and it seems likely that Larian will steadily implement improvements. Plus, it gives fans a chance to help shape the final product with their feedback.
Baldur’s Gate 3 launches into early access on October 6 for Mac, PC, and Stadia.
