Breath Of The Wild: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Calamity Ganon

Nintendo reinvented the wheel when it came to the Zelda franchise after a few mediocre outings, and the end result is nothing short of an absolute masterpiece. Breath Of The Wild is one of the most cohesive and innovative open-world games of all time, showing modern AAA developers how to go against the grain, instead of recycling the same mechanics over and over again.

One of the few divisive elements of Breath Of The Wild are the bosses featured in the game, which generally don’t pose as much of a challenge as the other facets of the game. This is especially true in the case of Calamity Ganon, who is somewhat challenging if all the Divine Beasts haven’t been completed yet… but is ridiculously easy if Link has freed all the four Beasts from their malice. It’s quite a shame since Calamity Ganon is one of the more mysterious entities in the entire game.

10 Calamity Ganon Has Been Defeated Before

One thing that most people might not be aware of is the fact that Calamity Ganon actually tried to take over Hyrule centuries back. However, this invasion attempt was thwarted by the Sheikah, who used their superior technology to defeat Calamity Ganon once and for all.

9 This Defeat Reignited Ganondorf’s Lust For Power

This defeat was the catalyst that made Ganon thirst for the power of the Sheikah, biding his time until he could take over their creations and lay waste to Hyrule. Perhaps the Sheikah could’ve anticipated this and upgraded their defenses… but that was not to be the case.

8 The Royal Family Is Indirectly Responsible For The Rise Of Calamity Ganon

The Royal Family of Hyrule might be fair and just rulers who wanted to do everything possible for the good of the kingdom… but the decision they made to banish the Sheikah ended up being the catalyst for their downfall. This prevented the Sheikah from developing their technology even further, forcing the Royal Family to use the same old army of Guardians and Divine Beasts to combat Calamity Ganon’s threat — something that ended up playing against them, since Ganon learned from his past mistakes and took over these Sentinels to turn them against the residents of Hyrule.

7 Calamity Ganon Was Dormant In A Cocoon Of Malice

After destroying the castle and laying waste to Hyrule, Calamity Ganon decided to wrap himself up in a cocoon of Malice, cutting himself off from the outside world. The main aim of this was to help Ganondorf regain his physical form… something that ended up succeeding to an extent.

6 The Penultimate Fight Is Against A Partially Regenerated Ganondorf

When Link finally manages to break into Hyrule Castle and face off against Calamity Ganon, he fights a weird spider-like creature that looks positively disgusting. This creature is actually the partially regenerated form of Ganondorf, as seen is his vaguely humanoid top half. One thing that most people perhaps didn’t notice about Calamity Ganon is the fact that…

5 He Has All The Weapons Of His Blights

Calamity Ganon sports the weapons of all his Blights during the penultimate fight, which is something that most keen-eyed players would’ve noticed.

The weapons he sports include a glowing orange blade (Fireblight Ganon), a blue spear (Waterblight Ganon), a beam cannon (Windblight Ganon), and a small energy sword at his back (Thunderblight Ganon).

4 Master Kohga Was Actually A Servant Of Ganon

The fact that the Yiga Clan and Ganon’s interests are aligned is a fact that most people would definitely not be surprised by. However, considering how much of a bumbling idiot Master Kohga really is, one must wonder how he managed to enlist himself as a servant of Ganon and his malice. This brings to light a more pressing topic of discussion…

3 Calamity Ganon’s Intelligence Is Up For Debate

During his fight with Link, Calamity Ganon barely shows any signs of intelligence, appearing extremely savage. This is quite puzzling, since Ganon was initially able to gather up enough intelligence to take over the creations of the Sheikah and also enlist the services of the Yiga Clan, which doesn’t seem like something that Calamity Ganon was capable of. Perhaps it was Link’s appearance that botched his regeneration and caused Calamity Ganon to go haywire… but that’s nothing more than just rampant speculation.

2 A Glitch Launches Calamity Ganon Into The Stratosphere

Moon-jumping is something that has become quite popular in the Breath Of The Wild community. This can be activated by starting the challenge where you need to hit targets on horseback, changing horses at the perfect time, and warping away to a different destination. This allows Link to jump infinitely, which makes for an extremely slow way to traverse Hyrule.

If Link decides to moon-jump out of the fight against Calamity Ganon, restarting the fight will cause the boss himself to disappear into nothingness, which is certainly… something.

1 A Mod Makes The Final Fight More Challenging

With the Ganon Rebalance mod, the player always has to fight the four Blights before Ganon, regardless of whether they fixed the Divine Beasts or not. Calamity Ganon also becomes more aggressive as well. As for Dark Beast Ganon, the player can actually download a different version of the mod that will add two Guardians to the battle, making this otherwise easy final phase a challenge in its own right.
