Many video game enthusiasts would probably agree that one of their worst fears is an anticipated game getting stuck in development hell. It’s such a shame when a game disappears from the public eye or faces a torrent of barriers during development that ultimately doom the game to failure. That’s what some gamers are starting to worry about when it comes to Biomutant. This sci-fi action RPG published by THQ Nordic has been awfully quiet lately, and some may be thinkingthat it’s a bad sign.
One would expect that Biomutant‘s developer, the fresh-faced Experiment 101, would be excitedly touting its game, which still claims it’s going to release in 2020. However, there’s not a lot of 2020 left for Biomutant to release in, and the last significant announcement about the game was a ten minute gameplay preview in June.
Biomutant‘s official Twitter account only has a few thousand followers, but it professes a dedicated Discord server for the game, which would indicate Experiment 101 is really eager to engage with players. However, there haven’t been any tweets on the account since early summer of 2020. Admittedly, this account seems to have a history of long gaps between tweets, but one would expect a little more social media engagement out of a game that’s supposed to release this year. At least a few screenshots from development and other teasers would be enough to help put fans at ease.
What’s even more worrying, Biomutant‘s own website is looking awfully neglected lately. On opening it, it initially looks promising with explanations of the game and screenshots, but the video section has fallen into disrepair. Many of the clips uploaded there via YouTube have apparently been set to private, meaning curious consumers will have to take it on themselves to actually see Biomutant gameplay. There’s a few possible explanations for this. It could be that the game is undergoing drastic revisions, and Experiment 101 no longer feels those clips are representative of the game. If that’s the case, fans will want to know that.
The developer insisted earlier this year that Biomutant is still in development. However, even that statement has grown outdated, and Biomutant hasn’t gotten much attention since June. One bright point for fans is that the game still has opportunity to release within THQ Nordic’s current fiscal year. Biomutant can’t be a surprise launch title on Sony and Microsoft’s new consoles if the game comes out in March, but there’s no word of Biomutant on PS5 or Xbox Series X anyway, and a late release is better than no release. Additionally, the developers has said before that it won’t announce the game’s release date until it’s completely sure it can hit the target.
Hopefully, all of this means that Biomutant hasn’t met with an untimely demise. In the internet age, a promise in February that the game is in development and a few minutes of gameplay from June are essentially ancient history. Anything could have changed in the last three months, but until something definitive gets said about the game, fans will have to take the developer’s words on good faith. Between all the post-apocalyptic lore and martial arts action that the game wants to offer, nobody could be blamed for being upset if it turns out Biomutant is being cancelled after all.
