Among all of the amazing trailers shown during the PS5 showcase came the news of a special Playstation Plus Collection. Those who subscribe to Playstation Plus upon receiving their new PS5 on day one get instant access to a collection of the greatest titles from the previous generation. It’s an amazing opportunity to play 18 of the biggest games from PS4.
While it may be a gamer’s dream to catch up on older titles or jump back into them for nostalgia, there’s a lot to choose from. With new PS5 games on the horizon, however, not everyone wants to invest their free time into older games. Instead, those who really want to dive into them might prefer to focus on particular selections from the group.
10 Batman: Arkham Knight
Whether an original fan of Rocksteady’s massive hit or simply looking for an excuse to start the series, Batman: Arkham Knight is available in the collection. Arkham Knight is the fourth major installment in the series, following Scarecrow, Deathstroke, and the Arkham Knight as they plan to unmask the Bat.
It’s a third-person action-adventure featuring an open-world and fully explorable Gotham City. Along with using stealth and bat-gadgets, Batman also gets significant use out of the batmobile, which he uses to traverse obstacles and combat tanks in the city.
9 Days Gone
Looking for a new and heavily story-driven take on a zombie game? Days Gone is an action-adventure survival horror game from SIE Bend Studio. Play as biker bro Deacon as he rides to survive in this new and dangerous world.
Don’t expect slow, shambling zombies in this game; the so-called “Freakers” are feral, tribe-like creatures that are much smarter than the typical zombie. What’s more, weapons, traps, and skills are all customizable, allowing players to find and create their own ways of dealing with rival gangs and Freaker hordes.
8 The Last Of Us: Remastered
Ready to dive into The Last of Us 2, but have yet to play the original game? Well, now’s their chance. There’s no better way to jump into this award-winning post-apocalyptic world than through the lens of the remastered edition.
This action-adventure game from Naughty Dog follows the story of Joel who takes teenager Ellie under his wing in a post-apocalyptic world. Born after the collapse of society, Ellie has little idea what life was like before the fungus zombies. The game swiftly teaches players the importance of checking every nook and cranny for ammo and first aid as supplies are limited.
7 Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
One of the greatest nightmares PS4 had to offer was Resident Evil 7: Biohazard from Capcom. This exploration-focused survival horror game drops players into a derelict mansion with a psychotic, cannibalistic family. Players follow the story of Ethan Winters as he travels to the bayou to find his missing wife. Following the clues she left, he ends up with the Bakers who can’t wait to make him part of the family.
With the franchise going back to its roots, expect puzzle-solving mechanics as well as horrific sequences, all in first-person glory. For some in-your-face fear, try playing it with PlayStation VR.
6 Bloodborne
Fans of Dark Souls might appreciate another title in FromSoftware’s collection, which is the action role-playing-game Bloodborne. It follows the story of a Hunter in the creepy, victorian city of Yharnam, desperate to find answers about a mysterious blood plague.
Similar to the aforementioned title, the game includes heavily weapon-focused combat and brutal mechanics. Needless to say, the dodge button becomes essential to surviving this corrupted world.
5 God Of War
The eighth installment in the popular franchise with the exact name of the first is God of War. It’s an action-adventure game from Santa Monica Studio that picks up with Kratos many years after God of War III. He now resides in ancient, mythical Norway with his son, Atreus. After his wife’s death, Kratos, along with his son, set out to fulfill her final wish of spreading her ashes at the highest peak of the nine realms.
Now using a magical battle ax instead of his famous dual blades, Kratos continues taking down large fantasy creatures in fast-paced combat. This time, of course, with the help of his son.
4 Final Fantasy XV
Whether a returning player or just getting started, Final Fantasy XV from Square Enix welcomes all. It follows the story of Prince Noctis and his friends amidst a war with a rival nation. He goes on a road trip, laying low until the opportunity comes to strike and take back his kingdom. Along the way, he learns of a mysterious power held by his bloodline.
This installment makes use of a new combat system that hybridizes the traditional turn-based style with action combat. While it’s a bit quirky at first, fans respond well to this new gameplay style.
3 Monster Hunter: World
One of the more unique editions to the Playstation Plus Collection is the MMORPG Monster Hunter: World from Capcom. There’s something for both long-time Monster Hunter fans and general MMO players alike here with a large world and tons of giant beasts for co-operative slaying.
The widely popular MMO utilizes an action combat system as players traverse the New World, discovering deadly beasts and taming the wilds. Players loot items and weapons from monsters as well as craft their own, fulfilling those desirable RPG elements. Oh, and players get a talking cat companion. What could be better than that?
2 Until Dawn
Until Dawn is a genre-defining horror game in which every single choice, including player performance, matters. It’s an interactive drama and survival horror by Supermassive Games that follows the story of eight young adults vacationing on Blackwood Mountain. Every choice made throughout the story has a consequence that comes into play later on.
The interesting thing about this game is that, depending on the choices made, all characters may either survive or die. Ensuring everyone’s survival requires finding clues, using fast reflexes, and paying attention to every detail.
1 Persona 5
Even for those who are relatively unfamiliar with the series, Persona 5 is a great entry point. It’s an anime-influenced role-playing game from Atlus and the sixth installment in the series. The game follows a group of high school students in Tokyo who use creatures called personas to invade people’s minds and influence their behavior.
Through turn-based combat, players find and collect new personas with different abilities. In many ways, it’s very similar to Pokémon, just in a darker universe with much higher stakes.
