Xbox Taiwan took a hilarious swipe at the PlayStation 5 via social media, pointing out the similarities between Sony’s next-gen console and a giant skyscraper. The jab wordlessly takes aim at the huge size of the PS5, a point of contention among Sony fans and critics alike.
There’s no getting around the fact that the PS5 is the biggest console in modern history. Although many fans have already allocated shelf space for the PS5 ahead of its November launch, others are stunned by the size difference between the consoles. Even in the slightly-slimmer Digital Edition variant, the PS5 is substantially larger than either of the new Xbox Series consoles. The PS5 size has some logic behind it – for example, down the road, players will be able to customize the hardware. Still, for right now, it’s an easy target for jokes.
As shared by Twitter account @_xboxnews, Xbox Taiwan shared a picture of a skyscraper at a distance. The skyscraper is flanked by the Xbox Series X on one side and the Xbox Series S on the other, and bears an uncanny resemblance to a PlayStation 5. The implication is obvious: both Xbox Series consoles are reasonably-sized, while the PlayStation 5 is large enough to dominate a city skyline. Given that recently-released AR models show the size difference between the new consoles better than ever before, the joke is undoubtedly well-timed.
Global Xbox social media accounts have recently made a number of quips at the expense of the PS5, although none go beyond mild teasing. For example, the Xbox UK Twitter account poked fun at the difficulties required to rest the PlayStation 5 horizontally. What makes these digs especially funny is the fact that none of them mentions the PlayStation 5 by name. No one is officially stating that the PS5 is the size of a skyscraper. What Xbox Taiwan does do, in this case, is make it easy for the viewer to see the connection.
Despite its social media savvy, not every Xbox post targeting the PS5 is effective. After Xbox criticized the PlayStation pre-order process on Twitter, the new Xbox consoles went on to have a disorganized pre-order process themselves. Of course, Microsoft has recently made some highly visible moves to make the Xbox a compelling option with its recent actions, such as purchasing ZeniMax. Still, perhaps Xbox should limit itself to only call out the PS5 on aspects (like console size) where the Xbox has a definitive advantage.
It’s worth noting that the size controversy is only one facet of the PS5 launch. Sony is doing its best to provide PS5 owners with an array of hotly-anticipated exclusives, and even provides players with a free game included with every console. The PS5 has some features yet to be revealed, such as the console’s user interface, and there may be even more positive surprises in store before the console launches next month.
