While much of the PC gaming world has been focused on Nvidia and AMDs new and upcoming graphics cards, there is considerable excitement and anticipation growing for AMD’s imminent announcement for its new Zen 3 powered CPUs. With less than 5 hours to go, plenty of people are already excitedly leaving likes and comments on the official video stream.
The announcement is expected to reveal that the AMD CPUs will be using the Ryzen 5000 Series brand name, apparently leaving the 4000 Series to cover mobile processors, and APU chips with CPU and graphics processors combined. Early indications suggest that AMD will be focusing on improving both clock speeds and the number of instructions each core can process per cycle (IPC), hoping to surpass Intel in gaming performance, the one area where Intel has a very slight advantage at present.
With the Ryzen 3000 Series already dominating in terms of sales, and a wait until 2021 for Intel’s new 11th generation Rocket Lake processors, the general expectation is that Zen 3 will only enhance AMDs current strength in the desktop market. With that in mind, it’s not surprising that the official video stream has over 8,500 likes with over four hours to go at the time of writing, with many comments suggesting that Intel are not looking forward to the announcement. The stream subtitle of “Where Gaming Begins” certainly supports the expectation that the redesigned processor will be aiming to surpass Intel in high-end gaming performance. Indeed, reports have suggested the flagship Ryzen 5000 CPU could reach as high as 4.9 GHz before overclocking, which would certainly challenge even the Intel i9-10900K for gaming, given that the former is likely to have 16 cores, versus 10 on the Intel chip. Given that the new processors will be compatible with existing B450, X470, B550, and X570 motherboards, upgrading to faster gaming performance is going to be very simple for many existing Ryzen users.
Gaming has been the one slight weakness of the all-conquering Ryzen 3000 Series, and if AMD can truly equal or surpass Intel here, it will turn heads in the high-end gaming PC market. If it prices competitively, Intel will need to knock Rocket Lake pricing out of the park to stand a chance in the mainstream desktop market too. Based on the leaks so far, few analysts are expecting AMD to do anything other than build strongly upon the huge sales success of Ryzen 3000.
Even better for gamers on a budget, the release of Zen 3 CPUs is also likely to mean an instant price reduction on Zen 2 CPUs, making late 2020 look like a very good time for those in need of a faster processor.
AMDs Zen 3 CPUs are expected to be available very soon.
