Genshin Impact offers players a ton of content to engage in without spending a dime, and on top of that it gets a lot of things right, making it difficult to criticize its flaws. Nonetheless, there are a lot of things that it could do to improve the overall experience of playing the game, particularly with the co-op features currently available. For many, co-op is a big deal in gaming, as more and more high profile titles opt to do away with it in favor of single-player stories or competitive multiplayer modes. For this reason, many fans were excited to hear all of the co-op options available in Genshin Impact, but the lack of a playable co-op story is a bit disappointing.
In Genshin Impact, players can initiate co-op upon reaching Adventure Rank 16. This takes a good deal of time, but isn’t the real issue that players have with its co-op. The major disappointment here is that story missions cannot be played in co-op. Thankfully, there’s still a lot of other things to do in Genshin Impact aside from the story mode, but most co-op enthusiasts agree it would have been nice to play through it with friends rather than alone.
Despite this flaw, many players will still find Genshin Impact‘s co-op extremely rewarding. It’s very rare to find a truly open-world game like Genshin Impact that allows four players to all roam freely through its many areas. There’s no limit on how close players need to stay to the host, and there’s nothing quite like roaming the beautiful environments of Genshin Impact with friends. The combat feels entirely different when in co-op as well, as instead of switching between party members to create devastating elemental bursts, players will need to coordinate with their friends.
Though story quests are paused as soon as co-op is initiated, players can still do a lot together. Most notable, perhaps, is that Domains can be completed in a party of four players. Visiting players can help the host complete daily quests or open Ley Line Outcrops, and world bosses are all available for players to hunt down together. There are some restrictions, but most of these make sense given the nature of the game. Finally, Genshin Impact is cross-play, meaning players on PC, Mobile, or PS4 can party up together without any worries. Players would be hard-pressed to find other co-op games with these kinds of offerings.
While all of that is great, there are still some disappointing restrictions that Genshin Impact needs to fix. Aside from story quests, players can’t challenge the Spiral Abyss together when playing in co-op, and shops are closed off to visiting players as well. Finally, visiting players can’t collect Anemoculus, Geoculus, or treasure chests, and they can’t make offerings to the Statues of the Seven. With all of these restrictions, the biggest questions that fans have is why this has to be the case.
There doesn’t seem to be a solid reason for why story quests are locked when playing Genshin Impact with friends. If the concern is in relation to spoilers, there could easily be a restriction that players are only able to participate in quests they have unlocked in their own world. Likewise, rather than making treasure chests locked off to visiting players, they should be able to open them if they haven’t in their world. This may be difficult to implement, but the same could hold true for Anemoculus and Geoculus. miHoYo has made no announcement about any intention to fix these multiplayer issues, and most of them seem intentional rather than bugs, but hopefully story quests are made playable with friends soon.
Genshin Impact is available now on Mobile, PC, and PS4, and later on Switch.
