Green Lantern Show for HBO Max Lands DC Vets as Writers and Showrunner

The Flash and Supergirl executive producer Greg Berlanti first announced the development of a Green Lantern series during the WarnerMedia Day presentation of the then-upcoming streaming service HBO Max. Now, Arrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim and The LEGO Batman Movie scribe Seth Grahame-Smith have signed on to spearhead the Green Lantern series.

HBO Max has given an order of 10 one-hour episodes to the Green Lantern series, which will be produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Grahame-Smith and Guggenheim are on board as co-writers and executive producers. In addition to those duties, Grahame-Smith will also serve as showrunner.

Per Variety, the series will chronicle the adventures of Green Lantern Corps members Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Alan Scott, and many more. In 2012, Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, was re-imagined by DC Comics as a gay man and the HBO Max series will remain true to this contemporary depiction of the superhero. Fan favorites such as Kilowog and Sinestro, a former Green Lantern Corps member turned adversary, will be included in the series as well. A host of brand new Green Lantern Corps heroes will also be introduced on the show.

Both Guggenheim and Grahame-Smith have prior experience working on DC-based projects. In addition to co-creating Arrow, Guggenheim served as showrunner on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and co-wrote the ill-fated Green Lantern film starring Ryan Reynolds. He also has an extensive writing career in comics with works for Marvel and DC under his belt, including Aquaman and Wolverine comics. Grahame-Smith, on the other hand, had been attached to write and direct The Flash film for Warner Bros. and DC before exiting the project over creative differences.

The Green Lantern series joins a growing list of DC projects being developed for HBO Max. In addition to taking on a number of shows previously exclusive to the DC Universe streaming service, HBO Max is expanding the DC Extended Universe film franchise with an original series based on The Suicide Squad‘s Peacemaker.

DC fans need not be concerned about these HBO Max projects having the relatively modest budgets of their CW counterparts, such as The Flash and Batwoman. HBO Max content chief Kevin Reilly has promised that the streaming service’s line-up of DC television shows will have production values on par with its feature films.

Green Lantern will be available on HBO Max at a yet-to-be-determined date.
