Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War TTK Sparks Controversy

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War won’t be out for another month, but already the franchise’s next entry is already landing itself in hot water with fans. With Black Ops Cold War’s first open beta currently underway, players have taken issue with how the game’s time-to-kill (TTK) was changed from its alpha.

A fast-paced series like Call of Duty has to be particularly mindful of how long it takes a player to take out another. Too much time can leave shootouts feeling sluggish, while too little can leave players unable to react to enemy fire before dying. Many felt that the TTK in Black Ops Cold War’s alpha struck a pretty good balance, but over the course of the first closed and open betas on the PS4 this week, players have been reporting on social media that the TTK has been changed for the beta. The general consensus among these players is that it’s too fast now, and some have even called out Treyarch for seemingly sneaking this change in unannounced.

But as it turns out, Treyarch didn’t actually make any changes to the TTK. This revelation comes courtesy of COD YouTuber XclusiveAce, who posted a video analysis diving into the time-to-kill in both the alpha and the beta. His investigation found that the actual TTK values for available weapons were not adjusted between the two pre-launch versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

So why do players feel that it’s different now? According to XclusiveAce, the likely culprit is the beta’s netcode, which appears to have something up with it that’s affecting the TTK for players. This isn’t too far-fetched of a possibility, as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s netcode had plenty of problems when the game launched last year.

Whatever issue is affecting the TTK in the game’s beta, it’s not the only thing players have been taking issue with this weekend. Although Treyarch has addressed most of the problems players had with the alpha for the beta, a number of fans have complained about the game’s use of skill-based matchmaking (SBMM). This has led to some players, including popular streamer Dr. Disrespect, to game Black Ops Cold War’s SBMM to show how broken the system is.

Treyarch has yet to comment on these issues, so it’s unclear how, or if, the developer intends to address them anytime soon.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will launch on November 13 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
