Destiny 2 Players Discover Cheese for Farming Cipher Decoders

The Festival of the Lost seasonal event returned to Destiny 2 this week, dressing up the Tower once more in the familiar Halloween decorations and bringing back the Haunted Forest activity. One slightly new element this year is the inclusion of Spider and his ciphers which can be earned by playing in normal activities in order to open more chests at the end of a Haunted Forest run. Ultimately, players can unlock triumphs tied directly to opening chests, meaning players have been attempting to find the best way to quickly obtain these key items.

Bungie has been tweaking the drop rates for these ciphers since they appeared in game due to how stingy they were at actually dropping. During the first 24 hours, ciphers were overly difficult to come by, leaving many players feeling like they were wasting their time. A few hotfixes later and players have now been reporting that the items are dropping more frequently. One player in particular has seemingly devised a way to farm a good amount of them in a short amount of time.

According to Chaostheory770, player simply need to load into a Trials of Osiris match, kill themselves, and ultimately lose. With this strategy, the Destiny 2 player has seen an average of 12 ciphers an hour. One major flaw to this strategy is that players can really only take advantage of it over the weekend when the game mode is available. Others have indicated that it may also be a good time for actual players to jump in and score a few easy wins, especially with the prize this week being The Summoner auto rifle.

The post has seemingly kicked off a new discussion on how viable this strategy really is. Some have pointed out alternative farming methods such as speed running the power level 750 Nightfalls, which award two ciphers per run and typically take most players between 5-6 minutes. Others have claimed that Tier 1 Reckoning is the fastest method. Defenders of the Trials strategy have also mentioned that losing matches is also a good way to complete the Trials Engram bounty, so technically Destiny 2 players can get more bang for their buck.

While the triumphs will lead players to new and unique looking gear such as the mummy wrapped Ghost, Sparrow, and Ship, players have started to find another mysterious item. The Ascendant Lens, an item awarded for opening 45 caches during the event, is leaving Destiny 2 players puzzled as to what exactly it does. While the item’s description mentions the Dream City specifically, players have yet to fully understand how to properly use it as well as where specifically.

Destiny 2 is available for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
