Phasmophobia has fans enraptured by its unique gameplay elements, but one of the most crucial aspects of it is giving some players issues. One of its many claims to fame is how players can use their mic to communicate with ghosts inside the game, but a “mic not working” error has been appearing frequently for some players preventing this pivotal interaction.
Phasmophobia players experiencing this issue are not completely out of luck, as although there aren’t any official fixes for this error yet, there are some temporary, home made remedies that may help out for the time being. Players struggling with this issue should read on.
The player’s mic is not only used for communicating with ghosts in the game, but also for speaking with the other people in the player’s ghost hunting group. For this reason, playing Phasmophobia without a mic is nearly impossible, unless players set up another form of communication and the one without a mic relies on others to communicate with the ghost.
The first thing players should do when approaching this error is make sure that it isn’t a client-side issue. To do this, there are a couple steps the player can take both in and out of the game. In the options menu under audio, there’s a voice recognition test button. This will allow players to verify that the game isn’t picking up their mic. If this doesn’t fix the issue, players should head to their PC’s control panel and test the audio there. If the PC is picking up the audio then the issue is with the game, otherwise players may need to set their output audio device to their mic. Phasmophobia is taking Twitch by storm, so players will want to get this issue fixed as soon as possible.
Should all of these efforts fail, players can try and download the beta version of Phasmophobia. This unstable build has a fix that should help with the game not recognizing the player’s mic, but it could also come with a host of other options by nature of it being an unfinished product. Finally, this last tip won’t help players fix the problem but could help prevent it in some cases. Using Alt+Tab to switch windows or minimizing the game has been known to cause audio issues, so players should avoid doing this at all costs.
Phasmophobia‘s developer, Kinetic Games, has made it clear that it is aware of the issue and working on a stable fix. The existence of a fix for the issue in the beta build is a good sign, and should mean that an actual patch will be coming shortly. Until then, players should try these steps to see if they can fix the problem on their own.
Phasmophobia is available now on PC.
