The Suicide Squad Cast Gathers in Full Costume in New Set Photo

A new photo from the set of Warner Bros. and DC’s The Suicide Squad reveals multiple cast members in costume as members of the supervillain team. Included in the image are Pete Davidson, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, and Sean Gunn, the brother of director James Gunn.

After Suicide Squad director David Ayer stepped away from the sequel to develop Gotham City Sirens, Warner Bros. enlisted James Gunn to write and direct a follow-up film shortly after the filmmaker was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 over years-old controversial social media posts. While Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will feature multiple returning cast members from Ayer’s film, the filmmaker is expected to offer audiences a fresh take on the eponymous team of villains while introducing new characters to Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe franchise.

Among the newcomers will be Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Mayling NG as Mongal, and Flula Borg as Javelin . The trio of stars was featured in the aforementioned set photos in full costume while filming a scene at the Peachtree Dekalb Airport in Chamblee, Georgia. Alongside them is Sean Gunn in a motion-capture suit for his computer-generated role as Weasel, the homicidal alter-ego of John Monroe in the comics. Director James Gunn first announced the full list of characters in The Suicide Squad during a panel at Warner Bros.’ DC FanDome event.

Additional newcomers include David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Steve Agee as the on-set King Shark and John Economos, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, Storm Reid as Tyla, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Peter Capaldi as Thinker, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Michael Rooker as Savant, Joaquín Cosío as Mayor General Mateo Suarez, Juan Diego Botto as Presidente General Silvio Luna, and Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt. They will be joined by returning stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Margot Robbie in her third appearance as Harley Quinn following Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. Despite featuring an ensemble cast, Gunn has already advised audiences to not get attached to certain characters considering the suicidal nature of the missions the titular team is tasked with.

While The Suicide Squad is still a little under a year away from being released in theaters, a spin-off show has already been given a straight-to-series order by HBO Max. Titled Peacemaker, the series will focus on the origins of Cena’s titular character, with the wrestler-turned-actor also serving as a co-executive producer while Gunn is on board as the writer of all eight episodes.

Fans need not be concerned about the Peacemaker spin-off further delaying the release of Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which Gunn will direct after being rehired by Disney in the year after his dismissal. Gunn has already confirmed he is working on the spin-off during the previously designated time period between The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3.

The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021.
