Call of Duty: Warzone is set to be a “constant” for the Call of Duty franchise moving forward, finding itself attached to whatever the latest game in the series is in terms of Battle Pass content. But even though Call of Duty: Warzone itself will be a constant, that doesn’t mean the content within the battle royale will stay the same. On the contrary, it seems as though Warzone may very well be getting a new map alongside the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
On ResetEra, dataminers have shared clips of various multiplayer maps from Black Ops Cold War, and have discovered that their file names include the letters “WZ.” This seems to suggest that these maps may very well be combined to create a new Warzone battle royale map, not unlike how the existing Warzone map is comprised of Modern Warfare‘s Ground War maps. Not only that, but the leaked footage actually corroborates an old leak about potential new Warzone map locations.
Back in July, dataminers found evidence that the new Call of Duty: Warzone map locations would include a Forest and Ski Slopes. The footage in the ResetEra thread shows just that, which certainly lends credibility to the old leak about a new Warzone map. However, it should be stressed that the footage itself is not Warzone gameplay, but rather, footage of Black Ops Cold War‘s multiplayer. The “WZ” in the file names is what ties the maps to the Warzone battle royale.
Before fans get too excited about this leak, though, they should keep in mind that it’s entirely possible that there are no plans to introduce a new Warzone map. And even if Treyarch legitimately has a new Warzone map in the works, that doesn’t mean it will be available alongside Black Ops Cold War‘s launch. In fact, it would actually be quite surprising for the new Warzone map to be available when Black Ops Cold War launches on November 13.
It seems that a far more likely scenario is that if this new Call of Duty: Warzone map exists, it will be added at some point in 2021. As fans may recall, Modern Warfare didn’t launch with Warzone; instead, it was released in March of this past year. Considering this, it’s entirely within the realm of possibility that the new Warzone map will be added a few months after Black Ops Cold War‘s launch, perhaps timed to coincide with the battle royale’s 1 year anniversary.
Unless Activision or Treyarch make an official announcement, fans should take any news about a potential new Call of Duty: Warzone map with a big grain of salt. But even so, there is some compelling evidence here as to what fans might be able to expect from it.
