James Bond Producers Know Daniel Craig’s Replacement Won’t be a Woman

Over a decade after portraying James Bond for the first time in Casino Royale, Daniel Craig’s tenure as 007 is set to conclude with the release of No Time to Die. While there are already rumors regarding Craig’s successor, Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli revealed that the search for the next 007 hasn’t even started yet. And while they don’t know who the replacement will be, they have some very definite ideas about who it won’t be.

No Time to Die, the 25th installment of the James Bond franchise and the fifth starring Craig as 007, will find the former Secret Intelligence Service agent enjoying a life of retirement in Jamaica. When his old friend CIA agent Felix Leiter arrives seeking help in finding a kidnapped scientist, Bond returns to active duty for a mission that reunites him with faces from the past and a handful of new characters to the franchise. Among the newcomers is Lashana Lynch as Nomi, an agent rumored to have taken over the 007 mantle from Bond after his retirement, fueling rumors that the character might take over the franchise after Craig’s departure.

Despite the rumors, Broccoli revealed the next James Bond hasn’t been selected yet and the search won’t even begin until after No Time to Die debuts. “I always say: you can only be in love with one person at a time. Once the film’s come out, then some time will pass, and then we’ll have to get on to the business of the future. But for now, we just cannot think about anything beyond Daniel,” she said during an interview with Total Film. While Craig’s performance as Bond has been generally well-received, Broccoli noted that his successor will have to find a new approach to portraying the character. “It will have to be reimagined, in the way each actor has reimagined the role. That’s what is so exciting and fun about this franchise; the character evolves. Eventually, when we have to think about it, we’ll find the right person,” she explained.

On the possibility of casting a person of color as the next James Bond, Broccoli appeared to be open to the idea. “He doesn’t need to be a white man. Not as far as I’m concerned,” she said. However, Broccoli appeared to be certain that a woman wouldn’t be chosen to take over the role, saying, “We should create roles for women, not just turn a man into a woman.” Broccoli has served as a producer on every Bond film alongside her half-brother Michael H. Wilson starting with Pierce Brosnan’s GoldenEye after her father, long-time franchise producer Albert R. Broccoli, handed control of the production company responsible for the film series, Eon Productions, to the duo in 1995.

While Craig initially appeared to have no interest in reprising the role of James Bond after Spectre, he was convinced to portray 007 one last time partly because he felt the story wasn’t complete. Craig has also delivered some short but important advice to whoever takes over the role after his exit, noting the importance of the character.

Unfortunately, Bond fans will have to wait even longer than expected for the conclusion of Craig’s 007 stories. The release date of No Time to Die was postponed until April 2021, marking the second time the film has been delayed this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

No Time to Die is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 2, 2021
