Civilization 6 Adding New Pirate Scenario | Game Rant

Sid Meier’s Civilization 6 continues to expand its worldly scope thanks to the addition of nations such as Byzantium and Gaul in the New Frontier Pass last month. That update as part of the paid DLC pass also included a new map script and the Dramatic Ages game mode. However, the developer is also rolling out its third free content update to players this month, with a primary focus on pirates.

Unlike the inclusion of more traditional civilizations like Byzantium, the pirates scenario — based in-part on Sid Meier’s Pirates! that released in 1987 and was remade in 2004 — will completely shake up how players approach the game. In a video detailing this big October update, Associate Producer Rony Kahana said the scenario will host up to four players trying to survive against other pirates and navies from nations like Britain and Spain on maps made with new art.

There are four factions of pirates with unique skills to choose from; Dread Pirate, Privateer, Swashbuckler, or Hoarder; but they all are unable to build settlements like in typical rounds of Civilization 6. Rather, new mechanics have been established, including some direct tie-ins to Sid Meier’s Pirates! such as collecting and equipping relics.

The third free content update will be available starting October 22 at 9:00 a.m. PDT, and it includes more than just pirate content. Various balance updates and patches are being applied as well, some based on player feedback. For example, AI leaders will be more active about rebuilding their defensive structures, and less likely to build religious structures if Religion is not an explicit part of their civilization.

Before diving into the content of the October update, Associate Producer Kevin Schultz announced that Firaxis games is reopening for any employee that feels comfortable returning, with work from home still being an option. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has resulted in many games being disrupted while developers transitioned to working entirely from home, but apparently these restrictions are being lifted for Civilization 6 developers.

Looking beyond the October update, Civilization 6 fans still have a lot of new content to anticipate in the coming months. The New Frontier pack promises six expansions total, with Byzantium and Gaul coming as part of the third wave. According to the game’s website, further updates are planned through at least March 2021 that will feature a total of three new civilizations, multiple new game modes, and other content like World Wonders.

Civilization 6 is available for Linux, Mobile, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
