Universal Studios Japan’s eagerly anticipated Super Nintendo World area will feature its very own Super Mario Cafe & Store, filled with exclusive merchandise. The theme park recently hosted a special media-only opening ceremony for the area, showing off a colorful world that is sure to thrill Nintendo fans.
Presented by Mario and Luigi themselves, the Super Mario Cafe & Store is filled with Mario-themed merchandise and goods, all revolving around Mario, his brother Luigi, and Princess Peach. Leaning into the color aesthetic of the Mario Bros., the front doors to the establishment are painted in familiar red and green hues, with their iconic hats proudly adorned over their respective doors.
Inside, Nintendo fans can find a range of different souvenirs to buy, ranging from wallets, t-shirts and hoodies to pillows and Mario and Luigi themed hats. The majority of the merchandise is adorned with a “Whose Cap?” slogan for the brothers and a “Whose Crown?” question for Princess Peach’s merchandise. Even a selection of Super Mario-themed earrings can be bought at the store. Although silhouettes and ample use of the Mario brothers’ mustaches are on show, it doesn’t appear as though the store offers any items that actually display Mario, Luigi or Princess Peach’s faces.
Meanwhile, the cafe next door is chockfull of Mario motifs as it offers its desserts, sweets, and culinary offerings. Diners can sit at colorful tables and enjoy the bricked walls designed to capture the beloved world of Mario. Question blocks, warp pipes, castles, a Yoshi egg, a Power Star, and even a neon-lit Piranha Plant are just some of the familiar Mario items featured.
Fans can indulge in two varieties of cream-filled pancake sandwiches. The first is a red Mario cap-shaped dessert, which is served with strawberries. Luigi’s pancakes are green and are accompanied by grapes. Drinks include Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach-themed choices, each one coming with a character-specific straw featuring either Mario or Luigi’s mustaches or Princess Peach’s crown, allowing fans to have some fun and take photos while enjoying the drinks. Like the merchandise, the food and drinks cartoons also sport the “Whose Cap?” and “Whose Crown?” slogan. A reusable Super Mushroom drink bottle is also available to purchase.
A Universal Studios Japan representative explained that the merchandise on offer in the Super Mario Cafe & Store will be exclusive to that location. It was noted that additional merchandise options will be available when Super Nintendo World fully opens in 2021. Originally intended to open this past summer, plans were derailed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Super Nintendo World will now open in spring 2021. However, the Super Mario Cafe & Store will be available to those visiting the theme park from Oct. 16.
