Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Was Developed Parallel to The Main Game

Landing earlier today, Ghost of Tsushima’s new Legends mode sees cooperative play introduced to Sucker Punch’s critically acclaimed samurai epic. Although the multiplayer update hasn’t been out for long, it’s seemingly already catching on with fans, who have been taking to social media to share their early thoughts on Ghost of Tsushima‘s substantial slice of new online content.

Many might assume that the Legends mode was planned by Sucker Punch after the initial launch of Ghost of Tsushima, with the game’s main campaign offering a huge experience filled with content. However, in a new interview with IGN, Legends lead Darren Bridges revealed that it had been developed in tandem with the core game all along.

“From the very beginning… we knew that we wanted cooperative multiplayer to be a pillar of the game,” Bridges claims, revealing that it was planned from the moment Ghost of Tsushima’s creative director, Nate Fox, pitched the project. He goes on to reveal that the team behind Legends “spent six months to a year thinking about different ideas,” with the concept for the more mythological world of the multiplayer mode emerging in the process. Since then, Bridges claims that the team was working “parallel” to the core Ghost of Tsushima team, ensuring that fans would get their hands on Legends shortly after the campaign released earlier this year.

For those who haven’t seen much of the mode, Legends deviates from Ghost of Tsushima in several aspects, most notably with its tone. While the base game would often reveal Tsushima’s most synonymous myths and legends to be tall tales based on very grounded events, the multiplayer DLC leans heavily into the surreal and supernatural, featuring demons, monsters, and mythical powers. Bridges even reveals that the supernatural focus was an important part of development, claiming that it allowed the team to be more “flexible with the fiction and the abilities and the techniques.” It’s a core part of Legends and something that ensures it sets itself apart from Jin’s journey in the main campaign.

Those who want to see how Bridges work on Legends turned out can download Ghost of Tsushima’s newest update now, providing access to the multiplayer mode as well some substantial new features. Legends looks to be a pretty comprehensive new slice of content, offering a variety of new missions as well as four classes for Ghost of Tsushima players to learn. As for the other features included in the update, a highly-requested New Game Plus mode makes the cut, bringing a new horse, a fresh merchant, and several additional upgrades to the campaign. It will also add a new loadout feature that looks to cut down time in menus and make for a more seamless samurai experience.

Ghost of Tsushima is out now exclusively for PlayStation 4.
