For many PC gamers, picking the right memory is a difficult task that traditionally hasn’t made much difference to gaming performance when compared to CPU and graphics card choice. However as with its Zen 2 processors, AMDs new Zen 3 / Ryzen 5000 Series CPUs will benefit considerably from having faster memory, and a leaked presentation slide has revealed exactly what the company believes is the optimal memory speed.
The slide was published on Turkish website Technopat, and reiterates how beyond the core frequency of the AMD Ryzen 5000 Series processors are three key speeds that impact performance, the Infinity Fabric speed, the Memory Controller Clock, and the Memory Clock. These three speeds are usually set to match each other, determined by the memory clock of the RAM type used in the PC, so DDR4-3600 would set the clocks to 1800 MHz, and DDR4-3800 would set them to 1900 MHz.
Now AMD has stated that in terms of price and performance, it believes that DDR4-4000 is the optimum memory speed, which would set the three internal CPU clocks to 2000 MHz. This would not only provide an overall processor speed increase, but is stated by AMD to help with overclocking Zen 3 / Ryzen 5000 Series processors, which already are stated to outperform Intel’s current flagship i9-10900K.
While further memory speed increases can add to performance, AMD clearly believes that the gains past DDR4-4000 become less price efficient, or may require more direct tweaking to make further gains. It is not yet known whether memory speeds will remain directly tied to the clock at any speeds beyond DDR4-4000, with Zen 2 processors the memory clocks were only linked up to DDR4-3733, and DDR4-3600 was the recommended sweet spot. Although gamers will be unable to reach the incredible speeds of professional overclockers, who recently got a new Ryzen 9 5950X to run at 6 GHz, the ability to get instant speed boosts and more capable overclocking with faster memory should help squeeze more out of the new CPUs.
Whereas for much of recent times, the amount of memory in a PC has been more important than the speed, the direct link between memory speed and processor performance in Zen 2 and Zen 3 CPUs means that stepping up to faster memory is now a worthwhile investment for AMD based gamers. For those looking to overclock, the benefit appears to be even greater, justifying the extra price premium. Either way, when combined with a good graphics card, Zen 3 looks to be a very capable platform indeed.
Gamers won’t need to wait much longer to see more reviews and benchmarks on how the new Zen 3 / Ryzen 5000 Series processors perform, with the official launch less than three weeks away, shortly after AMD reveals its new RX 6000 Series graphics cards.
