Sony is providing another way for players to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement by releasing a PlayStation 4 theme that’s available.
The theme has a black background and a simple stripe design that encompasses the logo of the movement and the words “Black Lives Matter” within the design. Players who want to use the theme can download it for free via the PlayStation Store on the PS4, download it on the PlayStation App, or on the PlayStation website itself by signing in.
The movement, which was formed to protest against racial injustice and police brutality worldwide, has also seen support from several game studios over the past year including Respawn Entertainment, Valve, and Bungie, with the latter showing support for the movement on its website by selling pins with all proceeds going to the Equal Justice Initiative.
Since the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in May, protests erupted around the world demanding justice and many of those daily protests continue today. Many game companies have since donated money towards the movement in solidarity including Square Enix, donating $250,000 towards the fight against racism, prejudice, and hate in June.
While actions by companies supporting the movement have been mostly welcomed, Twitch came under fire for releasing a very tone-deaf video that showcased a majority of white streamers. While the video did showcase streamers who were working to raise money towards the movement, much of the criticism stemmed for not supporting black creators in the video who were doing the same. Showcasing black creators is a small but important way to support voices that are not often heard, especially now.
While it is currently unknown if the PlayStation 5 will support themes, Sony did reveal the UI of the console last week in a video showcasing the newest features of the console. Some key features include a slightly re-designed UI, cross-chat support with the PS4, and an activities tab that keeps players updated on the progress of a game.
Meanwhile, Sony recently rolled out the latest update for the PlayStation 4 in an effort to streamline services and in preparation for the launch of the PlayStation 5. The new update adds more avatars for players to choose from for profiles, more in-depth parental controls, and some smaller changes to the party function on the console on the PS4. The update will also reflect on the PlayStation 5 when the console finally launches this November.
