WhatsApp Tests Dark Mode in Android Beta

WhatsApp is finally introducing Dark Theme—to Android beta users.

The feature, first spotted by WABetaInfo, is rolling out to users with the 2.20.13 beta update installed.

Visit Settings > Chats > Display to access the different themes:

  • Light: the usual white background
  • Dark: the superior* black/dark gray background
  • System default: match the mode used by your Android OS
  • Set by Battery Saver: automatically switch to light/dark based on Battery Saver settings (available for Android 9 and earlier)

With Dark Theme enabled, every section of WhatsApp will appear, well, darker. (The platform uses “night blue” colors, according to WABetaInfo.)

It’s unclear whether similarly dark chat wallpapers are also available. (Though I’m guessing that once you turn on Dark Theme, you’re stuck with a flat backdrop.)

Android beta testers: Be on the lookout for new Themes in the app’s chat settings. Everyone else will have to hang tight while the platform rolls out its latest feature.

There is no word on when (or even if) iOS users will gain access.

WhatsApp did not immediately respond to Geek’s request for comment.

With the beta release, WhatsApp becomes the third of Facebook’s major platforms to introduce dark mode, following Messenger and Instagram.

Aside from its obvious benefit of being easy on the eyes, dark mode can also extend your smartphone’s battery life—if it’s an OLED model.

In an unofficial test conducted last year by YouTuber PhoneBuff, an iPhone XS Max running dark mode outlived an identical device performing identical tasks in light mode.
