It’s a tough task of finding that fine balance between fun and realistic, and between building and living the life you want. However, sometimes it’s just nice to be able to play something different with similar mechanics. While waiting for the next expansion or game pack, games that fall close to its features are what keep most Simmers excited and interested. With more new games coming every year and even a potential challenger finally coming in to compete against EA’s ever-popular franchise, there are more choices than ever before for players who absolutely adore the franchise. Here’s what to play when The Sims 4 just isn’t cutting it.
15 My Time At Portia
A lot of The Sims 4 fans will have tried games like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, which is why My Time At Portia is sort of the perfect in-between game. It’s heavily inspired by Stardew Valley, with a similar premise of a main character returning to their roots to restore their father’s workshop to a better state.
The game is three-dimensional and quite immersive. Like in similar games, there are townies to befriend and interact with, as well as a whole array of quests and romance plotlines to discover. At its core, it all comes down to being a farming simulator with some mild life simulation features.
14 Cities: Skylines
Old school fans of The Sims franchise will remember just how fun games like SimCity were before they essentially disappeared from the market or became watered down. Thankfully, Cities: Skylines has done a remarkable job at bringing back that classic feel or creating the perfect city.

Paralives is a game still in development, but deserves a special spot on this list. From what players have been shown so far, this ambitious project just might be what pushes EA to bring real creativity and immersion back into its game.
Paralives has promised unparalleled customization when it comes to building houses and creating characters. There are aspects of the simulation The Sims franchise hasn’t even touched upon, such as in-depth personalities and interests that truly define who each Para is. It’s a game every demanding fan of The Sims franchise should check out and keep a close eye on.
10 BitLife
If you’re really into just being thrown into difficult decisions and funny, imagined situations of an alternate life, BitLife is perfect for you. You can get this application for your phone and randomize a new life for yourself, which will progress with every year. The game will put you through various life events and give you options from which you must choose carefully, as your decision will always have interesting and sometimes hilarious consequences. It’s a great bit of entertainment you can carry with you everywhere, with that random life event mechanic from The Sims very much present despite being only in text form.
9 Avakin Life
For a person on the go, but who wants a bit more out of the visuals of a game, an ideal pick is Avakin Life. You can get this on your smartphone and create exactly the character you’d like with the clothes you’ve always dreamed of.
While there’s no need to worry about your needs, you can definitely get very creative with furnishing your room and giving your character that perfect fashion style. Still, you’ll be looking after your Sim in your dream house and tending to their needs as well as sending them off to work, just like in the original game, and that’s as good as it can get.
2 Stardew Valley
Simmers who are also fans of retro games will definitely fall in love with Stardew Valley. You start off by creating your character, an office worker fed up with their dreary life in the city.
