The last proper Half-Life game was released in 2007. 13 Years ago. If you were born then there’s a very good chance you’re a gamer now, a gamer who grew up hearing tales of Valve’s legendary PC game series that abruptly vanished.
And now you may be wondering why all of these old folks are cautiously optimistic about Half-Life: Alyx, the surprise virtual reality revival starring Gordon Freeman’s capable partner Alyx Vance. To play that game this March you’ll need to shell out for a pricey VR headset like the Valve Index. However, right now you can catch up with the rest of the Half-Life series free of charge.
From now until April, Valve is letting Steam users play every major Half-Life entry for free. So that’s Half-Life and Half-Life 2, both of the Half-Life 2 episodes, and side projects Half-Life: Source, Blue Shift, and Opposing Force. That doesn’t include the Portal games, which do technically take place in the same universe. Still, that list boasts some of the best games of all time, shooters that have aged remarkably well all things considered.
Of course, if you do play those games, you can join the rest of us who have been left on edge for over a decade since the story decided to just stop rather than wrap up. And with Half-Life: Alyx being a prequel, we’re not sure how many answers to expect there either. Fortunately, you can find your own closure by reading the likely plot of Half-Life 2: Episode 3.
But regardless, Half-Life games are great, and for the next few months, you have even less of an excuse not to play them. Now about those Left 4 Dead 3 rumors…
