Chinese Coronavirus Slows Down New Apple iPhone Manufacturing

It’s literally still only the first month of the new decade and we’ve already been threatened by both another world war and a deadly virus. Gotta check all the bases for global destruction. A new coronavirus has already escaped its origins in Wuhan, China and has spread throughout the globe, including to America. Fatalities are thankfully limited so far to just a fraction of the thousands infected, by world governments are still scrambling to get the SARS-adjacent situation under control.

In China specifically that means quarantining highly infected areas. And since these areas overlap with major manufacturing facilities, tech companies set to launch new products are potentially about to feel the pinch.

Specifically, the coronavirus threatens Apple’s upcoming rumored iPhones, according to 9to5 Mac. Common wisdom has suggested that Apple is prepping a new slate of budget iPhones to complement the $1,000+ premium models. It’s been nearly four years since the iPhone SE, the last good iPhone, filled this spot and it’s on the cusp on being left behind. So I’m curious to see what the iPhone 9 and/or iPhone SE 2 wind up being. What’s the price? Where’s the headphone jack? Are they still too stupidly big?

However, we might end up waiting longer than Apple wants to learn these answers. Insiders anticipated Apple to launch these phones in the coming months. But one coronavirus-infected area in China, the Hubei Province, is perilously close to important Apple manufacturing sites. So as the Chinese government enforces strict travel restrictions in an effort to combat the virus, already cancelling Chinese New Year events, making these iPhones and getting them out of the country could easily prove difficult for Apple. Production of already available Apple products, from the iPhone 11 to new AirPods, could be impacted as well.
