A few months ago Super Smash Bros. Ultimate added a Mii costume for Sans that was so detailed there was virtually no difference between it and a hypothetical “official” version of the Undertale character joining the roster. And now they’ve given the same treatment to another indie darling character with a gun and squat cartoon proportions. The Cuphead Mii Gunner costume is honestly more exciting than the eighth(!) Fire Emblem character Byleth it launches alongside. Choosing between Mii Gunner’s custom projectiles feels just like choosing your loadout in the original game’s 1930s animation take on Gunstar Heroes. And the jazz song they added is just as perfect for Smash battles as it was for hellish gambling.
The latest Nintendo Direct had plenty of exciting news for fans of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The majestic crossover fighter is adding Fatal Fury’s Terry Bogard to the cast. And beyond the first five paid DLC characters even more folks are joining the battle. Plus you can play as Banjo and Kazooie right now. Everyone is here.
But for some fans the most hyped piece of news was a particularly 75 cent Mii costume. Sans from Undertale is now a guest skin for Mii Gunner. And while we won’t be writing him his own guide, after getting some hands-on time we believe the love and care put into this costume basically makes the cool skeleton dude a brand new character.
And really this is the best of both worlds. Undertale is an acclaimed game, an empathetic RPG that’s freely borrows from Nintendo’s own EarthBound series. The game’s popularity in Japan gave Toby Fox dream access to his heroes at Nintendo. Along with getting Sans in Smash and playing (very well) against Sakurai, Fox is composing music for the upcoming Little Town Hero from Game Freak. Nintendo has also highlighted Deltarune, the Undertale follow-up, on the Switch.
But considering just how recent the indie game is, and how annoying Undertale fans can be, I personally think a Sans costume is an appropriate choice rather than full-blown character.
It helps that this is such a lovingly crafted costume. Compared to other Mii costumes based on existing characters, Sans’ proportions look correct. He doesn’t look like someone in a Sans costumes he just looks like Sans. The gun, the hoodie, the detail on the skull, the ability to pick different moves as if it were an RPG. It feels right. It sounds right, too, since the costume comes with a banging remix of Undertale anthem “Megalovania.”
We already love Mii Fighters and the potential endless amount of new characters they provide if you are creative enough. But not since Geno in Smash 4 has a Mii Costume satisfied a fan desire so thoroughly. Everyone’s favorite characters won’t all come to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. We must eventually let Sakurai rest. But Mii costumes like Sans give us hope that truly no one is off the table. Now bring on Doom guy!
