Destiny 2: 5 Best Ships In The Game (& The 5 Worst) | Game Rant

While Destiny 2 may have tons of cool weapons and armor to hunt for, a player’s ship permeates every part of the experience. It doesn’t have any tangible gameplay benefits, but it shows up in the most important parts of Destiny 2: in orbit and during loading screens.

Any seasoned Destiny 2 player will know that returning to orbit or waiting for an activity to load comprise a good chunk of Destiny 2‘s screentime, so players might as well look at a cool ship while waiting. These are some of the coolest ships in Destiny 2 as well as some players wouldn’t want to show off when waiting for the raid team in orbit.

Updated on March 23rd, 2021 by Hodey Johns: Three more seasons have been released since the writing of this article. The original article made such a compelling case for all ten entries that none of them could be reasonably removed, so two more “best” and “worst” entries have been added, bringing the total to fourteen. As always, the entries will be a matter of opinion and this is not a popularity contest, but after monitoring forums and chat logs, there does appear to be some consensus over which ships people are excited to see and which ones get a giggle a best.

14 Best – Stardevil Predator

Players can make a lot of mistakes when they are still figuring out the game. They can try to use sniper rifles when enemies are dashing all over. They can try to use shotguns when they don’t know how they work. But if they fly away in the Stardevil Predator, failure won’t feel so bad.

This ship looks like it flew between five different sci-fi movies and picked up the best parts of each. It’s sleek and compact and the style screams that it’s ready to go on a mission to blow up an evil planetary space station.

13 Worst – Last Flight Home

Time and time again, the game tries to force the concept of the escape pod to work aesthetically. One has to admire their valiant effort, even with the Last Flight Home. It’s very detailed with frost scarring, folds, rips, dents, and tears all lovingly detailed.

The problem? That’s a lot of work done into making this overstuffed space jacked look bad when it already isn’t great. Players that kill enemies in PvP with an amazing handcannon and then fly off in this capsule are giving their enemies the last laugh.

12 Best – A Thousand Wings

It’s incredibly obvious why this one is on the list. Not only does this ship have one of the coolest designs of anything that anyone can earn in Destiny 2, but it’s also only available to those who go the extra distance and complete a difficult series of challenges to obtain it. This ship isn’t obtained by random drop, but rather a test of skill.

Completing the secret quest The Whisper on Heroic difficulty and finding five hidden chests will reward gamers with this ship’s blueprint, and to get the finished ship they’ll have to run the same quest on Heroic difficulty multiple times. It’s one of Destiny 2‘s hardest quests, and running it successfully four times on Heroic is quite the hurdle to cross, making this ship one of Destiny 2‘s rarest.

11 Worst – Asher Mir’s One Way Ticket

When placed next to ships like A Thousand Wings, it’s not hard to see why Asher Mir’s One Way Ticket is one of the worst ships in the game. So many of Destiny 2‘s ships have imaginative and expressive designs, while Asher Mir’s One Way Ticket is just a small pod with nothing much else going on for it.

The simple color scheme doesn’t help either. While green, white, and gray aren’t an offensive combination, they’re just so bland in comparison to the other bright and vibrant ships in Destiny 2‘s catalog.

10 Best – Black Peregrine

So many of Destiny 2‘s ships have outlandish and bold designs, but Black Peregrine is able to stand amongst the best ships in the game with a relatively simple look. It’s all mostly one color and there aren’t many decorations or adornments attached, but its slender body emanates elegance.

Sure, some ships like A Thousand Wings might represent fantastic accomplishments or make a Guardian stand out because of their bright colors, but Black Peregrine is for a higher class of Guardian. Black Peregrine is for the classy player, the type who applies the same shader to each of their weapons so they match. It’s the most elegant travel solution in all of Destiny 2, and it shows.

9 Worst – Whetted Resolution

Look at this thing. Seriously, just look at it. It’s no wonder no one ever sees it flying around in Whetted Resolution. That color scheme would make even the most fashion oblivious Guardian embarrassed. The yellow and green combo makes it look like a flying can of lemon-lime soda.

It’s a Bright Engram drop, too, like most ships. Earning enough experience to get one from Tess Everis only to reveal Whetted Resolution has to be one of the worst feelings in the world. This is one of the worst ships in all of Destiny 2 without a doubt.

8 Best – Waking Nightmare

Some people want the role-playing experience where innocent civilians look up to the skies, see the player, and say, “Hooray, we are saved!” Others want to descent from the skies, have the bad guys look at each other, and say, “Well, we’re dead.” This is the ship for them.

The Waking Nightmare is the most aptly named ship on this list as it looks as though it has been ripped right out of a bad dream. The blades, exposed metallic hull, and asymmetrical design fashion an awesome and terrifying vessel, making mundane activities like finding Ethereal Charms still feel hardcore.

7 Worst – Canopus Wing

The is a huge difference between mystery and confusion. People uncovering the secrets of Uldren Sov will be in for a mystery. People who try to board the Canopus Wing won’t even know which way is the front.

There’s a good reason that chic fashion designers favor the vertical over the horizontal. This ship is so wide that it actually goes off the side of the display screen. And should the community really have to tell the development team that two gigantic orange balls don’t count as engines?

6 Best – Death to Kells

Death to Kells isn’t the most elegant or attractive ship, but it’s definitely one of the coolest. The design is unlike any of Destiny 2‘s other ships and there’s actually a very interesting reason behind that fact.

The lore behind Death to Kells states that it was created by Avrok, a Fallen dreg who is one of Spider’s associates. Avrok named the ship after his hatred of Kells, the Fallen leadership, as he felt he had been abandoned and ignored by Fallen society. Death to Kells is one of the only ships in Destiny 2 to be manufactured by a race other than humans, and its distinctly Fallen design is immediately noticeable to anyone who lays eyes on it.

5 Worst- Upward Spiral

Although its design may be distinct and recognizable, it’s highly unlikely that anyone would choose Upward Spiral over most of Destiny 2‘s other ships. It’s bland, boring, and simple. The only thing it has going for it is its bright purple color scheme, but that isn’t exactly saying much when some of the other ships on this list have beautiful color mixtures or grand effects.

It’s not an offensively bad ship by any means, but Destiny 2 doesn’t have many outright bad ships, making this ship one of the game’s worst by default. The competition is much stiffer than it is with the game’s sparrows, of which there are tons of lame ones, so a simple purple ship just doesn’t make the cut.

4 Best – Saint-14’s Gray Pigeon

Arguably one of the only good things to come out of the heavily criticized Curse of Osiris expansion, Saint-14’s Gray Pigeon is hands down one of the best ships in Destiny 2. It’s one of the few ships in the game built to actually resemble something, in this case, the titular gray pigeon.

The ribbons that flow from its wings give the illusion of a bird soaring through the sky, and that’s exactly the type of imagery people want to be associated with their ship. It also helps that Saint-14 was heavily featured in Destiny 2‘s Season of Dawn, which brought about many positive changes for the game.

3 Worst – Wanderlonging

Wanderlonging suffers from the same key issue that many of the other worst ships on this list suffer from. It’s just too simple to be worth equipping. Destiny 2 has been out for a few years at this point, so the repertoire of ships to pull from continues to grow larger and larger, leaving less room for average ships like this.

Even though there’s technically nothing wrong with ships like this, the styles can really only go up from here, making Wandersong, unfortunately, one of Destiny 2‘s worst ships. Bringing this into orbit before a raid will have raid teams cracking jokes behind other players’ backs, as they will each have their own ship that’s much cooler than Wandersong.

2 Best – Holborn’s Splint

Holborn’s Splint, like Black Peregrine, is a very sleek ship, but its design is more adventurous than elegant, with wings protruding in four directions and red accents covering the front of the ship. If the red and white color scheme is less than inspiring, then don’t worry. Holborn’s Splint pairs wonderfully with all different kinds of shaders, and it can be personalized.

Customizing the ship is highly recommended, especially with how common this ship is. Yes, it’s one of the best ships in the game, and because it doesn’t have a tough challenge gating people from obtaining it, lots of people have Holborn’s Splint. It has a great design, but having tons of people with the same ship just doesn’t feel unique.

1 Worst – Aerial Shroud

Just like Whetted Resolution, this ship has so many problems. First, the overall shape is clunky and unwieldy. Second, the ship has a large piece of cloth secured to the front with rope, which is supposed to create an interesting look but ultimately fails to as a result of the low texture detail.

Also, speaking of low texture detail, the purple parts of the cloth appear as if they’re photoshopped onto the ship. They don’t mesh well with the rest of the ship’s design, and there isn’t a clean transition between the brown and purple parts of the cloth. This ship is interesting in concept, but in practice, it’s anything but.
